What is Application Performance Management (APM)? Like a lot of good
questions, it depends on your business needs. What is the goal of an ideal
APM? Does it mean 99.999% availability? Perhaps it is a favorable overall
end user experience when using the application but, as compared to what?
My point is that Application Performance Management / Monitoring means
different things to different businesses and it can even depend on the
application involved.
What is the Goal of APM
“Begin with the goal in mind.” I wish I could take credit for that
quote. What is the goal of the APM? Have you listed out the objectives you
hope to obtain from your APM strategy? This approach will help your team
ensure satisfaction with the final solution chosen. Here are some examples.
Minimum of 99.999% availability with lower Mean Time To Know (MTTK) and Mean
Time To Repair (MTTR) Less ... (more)
From time to time, I find myself lassoing a sacred cow in this Editorial
space, dragging it over to the slaughterhouse of rhetoric, and ultimately
barbecuing its falsehood over the stainless-steel, six-burner,
propane-powered grill of real-world experience. To wit, the current industry
obsession with SOA as a panacea for every information system ill from
performance to security is, in my humble opinion, a phenomenal load of crap.
Now, please don't misunderstand me. I am not saying that there isn't a myriad
of benefits to be derived from exposing systems' functionality for access by
other automated systems simply by passing XML across industry-standard
networking protocols such as HTTP and TCP. Web services are great! If you
have to interoperate with non-Microsoft systems, they may be your only
option. If you are building a system today and you suspect that some other... (more)

To the President of Syria, Mr. and Mrs. Bashar al-Assad
Mr. and Mrs. President Bashar al-Assad:
At the tender age of 17 months my severely ill daughter Sofia, an American
citizen, was abducted by her mother on Monday, July 26, in Istanbul, Turkey,
and taken to Syria.
Fox News: ▸ video ▸ story
I was informed yesterday by Sofia's mother that she will not be coming back
to the United States nor will she allow Sofia to return home.
Sofia has been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that requires
immediate treatment in the United States. It was scheduled to start on July
27, 2010, in New Jersey, the day after her abduction and was supposed to last
until she reaches the age of 3.
Any delay in the urgently needed treatment will result in a life-long
disability for Sofia and make her dependent for the whole of her a... (more)
Do we need programming languages?
You may think that the answer is no. But, if you go by the recent trend you
may need to change your mind.
Consider for example the following questions:
Why is Google working two (GO, DART) new programming languages? Why has IBM
(X10), Cray (Chapel) and Red Hat (Ceylon) working on creating a new
programming language of its own?
Why did the attendees of a recent conference in London select 5 (HTML5, DART,
Scala, Clojure, Node.js) new languages as the most important software
development trends for 2012? What does Neil McAllister mean when he says that
these 10 (DART, Ceylon, GO, F#, OPA, Fantom, Zimbu, X10, Haxe, Chapel)
programming languages that could shake up IT? Why did Anders Hejlsberg of
Microsoft, the creator of Turbo Pascal, Delphi and C# launch TypeScript?
Are new programming languages getting created just to satisfy the creativ... (more)

Microsoft
You’d be forgiven for thinking this whole browser choice issue was resolved
back in 2009, but no. European regulators are back on Redmond’s back,
following suspicions that the megacorp may not be complying with the deal it
struck all that time ago. Specifically, the allegations focus on versions of
Windows 7 sold since February 2011 that came preloaded with patches, and
which may not have displayed the all-important browser selection screen that
offered up IE alternatives like Firefox and Chrome. The EU’s concerns have
already been bluntly expressed by Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia,
who said that Microsoft “should expect sanctions” if the “infringement
is confirmed” by the investigation. Read the full story at Engadget.

Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.
