As the clock ticks and the September 3 deadline nears, speculation is rising
that the European Commission may throw a spanner into the Oracle-Sun merger
and delay things another four months.
Reuters said late Tuesday that EC regulators were fretting over the
competitive implications of Oracle’s acquisition of MySQL and debating
whether to open a full-scale investigation.
If the EC decides to probe, the acquisition could get a pass, a fail or get
loaded down with conditions, dragging out any resolution until late December,
early January.
Further delays will give IBM and HP even more time than they’ve already had
to rustle Sun’s remaining hardware customers. They’ve been chasing them
since Oracle announced its intentions to buy Sun in April.

Oh, lookee there. Reuters says that the Justice Department, which cleared the
Oracle-Sun merger this summer and publicly snapped – in diplomatic language
of course – at the European Commission when it objected, is sending a
representative to the sub rosa hearing Thursday and Friday at which Oracle is
supposed to try to convince the regulator to let it swallow Sun MySQL and
all.
If the EC keeps going in the direction it’s been going – and it’s more
than likely to – maybe it can manage to provoke an international incident
out of the merger of two American companies like it nearly did when it
blocked the GE-Honeywell merger, still a sore spot in certain circles,
circles that may not be too thrilled with the way it’s treated two other
American icons the last few years.
If the EC’s antitrust czarina Neelie Kroes didn’t like the DOJ publicly
looking askance at her state... (more)

Oracle database is a relational database management system that mostly
complies with ACID transaction requirements ( atomicity, consistency,
isolation, durability ). It means that each database transaction will be
executed in a reliable, safe and integral manner. In order to comply with
ACID Oracle database software implements fairly complex and expensive (in
terms of computing resources, i.e., CPU, disk, memory) set of processes like
redo and undo logging, memory latching, meta data maintenance etc. that make
concurrent work possible, while maintaining data integrity. Any database
transaction or even SELECT statement makes relational database systems
perform tremendous amounts of work behind the scene, thus making it
inherently slow and resource intensive.
Oracle is trying to address scalability and performance problem in a variety
of ways:
