Today, offerings such as Amazon Web Services' Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) are
providing a new model for on demand compute resources based on virtual
machines. Virtual appliances are a natural deployment vehicle for this type
of infrastructure, allowing a clean separation between the memory, compute,
and storage resources managed by the appliance provider and the complete
software stack managed by the end user. Virtual appliances also allow a
simple transition from internal virtualization clusters to outsourced
providers, enabling capacity spikes to be handled.
This session will showcase the tremendous flexibility, scalability, and
financial savings that result from leveraging virtual appliances and cloud
computing. Billy Marshall, CEO and founder of rPath will present a real life
case study on KnowledgeTree, a document management provider, to examine the

Ever since I first published here my tentative list of Top 50 Bloggers on
Cloud Computing it became clear that an expansion would be needed before too
long. Thanks to community feedback via my Twitter account
(http://twitter.com/jg21) here goes - just three months before Cloud
Expo Silicon Valley (November 7-10) - with an expanded roster, listed as
before in alphabetical order since I am making no attempt at this stage to
rank the various blogs, merely to map - and celebrate - their existence.

Practically every one with an online business model is now referring to their
service as cloud computing - starting from your average Joe hosting firm all
the way to the SaaS/S+S vendors, every wants to ride the next buzzword wave,
and this distorts the cloud computing term all together. Part of the reason
being that historically the term "cloud" loosely referred to anything
that’s available online/on the Internet. Ask a bunch of geeks and you would
get a different explanation of cloud computing from each person (if you ever
asked a bunch of people what Web 2.0 is you know what I mean). So how can we
qualify if a service is really leveraging the cloud computing model?
That’s a tough question. An easier way to answer this is by first examining
the behavior of services provided by some of the well known cloud computing
vendors. Lets take Amazon a... (more)
Dan Chu, VMware's VP of Emerging Business, intends to take an industry
leader's perspective next week when he presents a breakout session at
SYS-CON's 1st International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo (November
19-21, 2008) being held at The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA. Chu will apply
that perspective to the new disruptive trend in the market that everyone is
calling cloud computing.
In his session, "The Enterprise Cloud: Applications On and Off Premise," Chu
will uncover among other things VMware's plan to leverage its technology
leadership in virtualization to deliver reliable, mobile technology to its
customers and service providers worldwide. He will explore cloud pitfalls and
uncover new methods for delivering applications on or off premise.
VMware's CTO Steve Herrod is also appearing at the event, as one of the
distinguished participants on the SYS-CON.TV ... (more)
Oh, look. Google’s found another way to annoy the…to annoy Microsoft.
This one’s called Native Client, a shiny new open source R&D; project aimed
at running fast x86 native code in web applications.
It’s another way of going for the desktop’s jugular and, paired with
Google Gears and Google Chrome, potentially a giant step for
browser-as-platform.
According to a Google blog, it’s supposed to let web developers “access
the full power of the client’s CPU while maintaining the browser
neutrality, OS portability and safety that people expect from web
applications.”
“If web developers could use all of this power,” Google muses, “just
imagine the rich, dynamic experiences they could create.”
Some people think Native Client might be that Google webOS that Google
groupies are forever talking about – or at least a piece of it. Others take
it for a remake of Java or a JavaScript r... (more)

Remember when…it was sprawl or nothing? Remember when…you had to choose
between security and speed? Remember when…you had to choose between agility
and performance?
It’s time for a change; a change that brings freedom and choice to the data
center and puts IT back in control of its own architectural destiny.

Meru’s virtual cell architecture proven as only one to reliably deliver
full potential of 802.11n to extremely high user density without dropout or
loss of performance in ground-breaking new e-learning environment
London, 8th September 2009 – Wireless networking from Meru is helping two
prestigious Kent academies transition into a fully shared and integrated
educational model.
By 2010 Maidstone’s New Line Learning Academies will be transformed into
wireless “hubs” of interactive learning, with Meru Networks providing the
wireless. Meru was chosen over other vendors for its distinctive virtual cell
wireless LAN architecture, which makes it capable of running 802.11n at full
speed in both spectrums, while simultaneously supporting an extremely high
density of users without any dropouts, disconnections or other interruptions
to service. Building Zones, a specialist in ... (more)
Unisys Session at Cloud Expo
We are constantly bombarded with articles and presentations about the
security risks in cloud computing and why organizations need to be concerned
about them as they consider a move. The truth is that organizations do need
to be concerned about security - but they needn't be paralyzed by fear. In
fact, the heightened concern we're seeing has actually become a spur to
action and has begun to drive cloud security to a whole new level.
In his session at the 5th International Cloud Expo, Scott C. Sanchez, CISSP,
Director of the S&T; Security Portfolio at Unisys Corporation, will focus on
the key areas where a successful migration to cloud computing can actually
improve security and reduce risk, and address some of the major issues to
account for before and during that migration.
