Back in 2001 (wow – seems like yesterday!), F5 introduced the first-ever,
open/Web services API for network devices called iControl. With it, it
sparked a major shift in the way companies could look at integrating network
devices with applications. Leading software vendors figured it out. And,
thousands of companies since then have used iControl to build custom
monitoring apps, management solutions that more closely fit their internal
processes, and even automate some cool stuff including enabling applications
to tell the network how to deliver them.
While all fine and dandy (and fun to be a part of personally), the most
important decision and event was the willingness to embrace SOAP/XML. By
doing this (kudos to Joe Pruitt, BTW, for this call… it wasn’t without
some feisty internal debate, truth be told), it opened up API access to our

As Daniel Beazer, Consultant, Broad Group comments; "The findings were very
interesting and revealed that every participant saw considerable benefits in
the cloud; but many felt there were considerable barriers to achieving these
benefits."

Graphical user interface (GUI) testing is a potentially problematic area
because constructing effective test cases is more difficult than the
corresponding application logic. The roadblocks to effective functional GUI
testing are:
Traditional test coverage criteria like "80% coverage of the lines of code"
may not be sufficient to trap all the user interaction scenarios. End users
often use a different user task interaction model than the one conceived by
the development team.
Functional GUI testing needs to deal with GUI events as well as the effects
of the underlying application logic that results in changes to the data and
presentation.
The common methods for functional GUI testing are the "record and execute"
script technique and writing test programs for different scenarios. In the
"record and execute," the test designer interacts with the GUI and all the

Keith Lea writes of the benchmark, on his results page, "I was sick of
hearing people say Java was slow, when I know it's pretty fast, so I took the
benchmark code for C++ and Java from the now outdated Great Computer Language
Shootout and ran the tests myself."
Lea used G++ (GCC) 3.3.1 20030930 (with glibc 2.3.2-98) for the C++, with the
-O2 flag (for both i386 and i686). He compiled the Java code normally with
the Sun Java 1.4.2_01 compiler, and ran it with the Sun 1.4.2_01 JVM. He ran
the tests on Red Hat Linux 9 / Fedora Test1 with the 2.4.20-20.9 kernel on a
T30 laptop. The laptop "has a Pentium 4 mobile chip, 512MB of memory, a sort
of slow disk," he notes.
The results he got were that Java is significantly faster than optimized C++
in many cases.
"They also show that no one should ever run the client JVM when given the
choice," Lea adds. ("Everyone has the c... (more)
