How to Become a 'Digital Predator' not 'Digital Prey'
According to Forrester Research, every business will become either a digital
predator or digital prey by 2020. To avoid demise, organizations must rapidly
create new sources of value in their end-to-end customer experiences. True
digital predators also must break down information and process silos and
extend digital transformation initiatives to empower employees with the
digital resources needed to win, serve, and retain customers.

As I wrote earlier this year over at InfoWorld, Microsoft took another step
toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was
releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why
this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this
gives Microsoft.
Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop
locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked
its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly
different for some of the configurations -- I can't tell you how many nights
I have lost sleep because of environments being slightly different!
Development and hosting are two completely different things. What Microsoft
did is one-upped Google and Amazon.
The psychological advantage comes into play for companies that aren't 100 ... (more)
Machine to Container (M2C) Teleports Existing Enterprise Apps to the Cloud
It's been a busy time for tech's ongoing infatuation with containers. Amazon
just announced EC2 Container Registry to simply container management. The new
Azure container service taps into Microsoft's partnership with Docker and
Mesosphere. You know when there's a standard for containers on the table
there's money on the table, too.
Everyone is talking containers because they reduce a ton of
development-related challenges and make it much easier to move across
production and testing environments and clouds. Containers are the technology
that, many believe, deliver on the long-promised portability in the cloud to
avoid vendor lock-in, and put developers, system administrators and their
enterprises in the driver's seat.
Getting up to speed about containers is not easy, but the good news is, the... (more)

With this post I start with the basics on Hadoop, including its history.
The story starts with the early days of Google. Engineers needed to design
new ways to store and process and retrieve data that would scale to very
large sizes. The published two papers on their design in 2003, and the highly
regarded community-focused Doug Cutting produced an open source version of
the software called Hadoop.
Along with that open source project came many other related open source
capabilities, and soon an entire big data framework was created. New methods
of storing, processing and retrieving data were now available, free, from the
Apache Software Foundation. And innovation continued as a firm called
Cloudera stood up to continue to accelerate innovation into the open source
project.
Hadoop is a single data platform infrastructure that is more simplified,

40 Months of Hyper-Digital Transformation
In the next forty months - just over three years - businesses will undergo
extraordinary changes. The exponential growth of digitization and machine
learning will see a step function change in how businesses create value,
satisfy customers, and outperform their competition. In the next forty months
companies will take the actions that will see them get to the next level of
the game called Capitalism. Or they won't - game over. The winners of today
and tomorrow think differently, follow different strategies, deploy different
technologies, make cybersecurity a top priority and are cognizant the clock
is ticking.

transformation winner, Cognizant's Center for the future of Work, in

Connected Teams, Connected Code, and the Connected Device: The Challenges of
IoT Software Delivery
Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set
of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues.
In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate
application components: the software embedded in the device, the back-end
service, and the mobile application for the end user's controls. Each
component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and
practices, and deployed to a different stack/target - this makes the
integration of these separate pipelines and the coordination of software
updates for IoT more problematic. How do you coordinate the diverse moving
parts that must come together when developing your IoT product or updating
each of its components?

@CloudExpo Stories By Pat Romanski Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor – all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. As Agile has settled in as a mainstream practice, now DevOps has emerged as the next wave to improve software delivery speed and output. To make DevOps work, organization...
