Who’s Who in Cloud May 31, 2013

I dare you to say big data again. It’s Friday and it feels like summer (finally), though perhaps at 92 degrees, it’s a little soon for so much heat. This week’s cloud publishings covered a nice range of topics including how AWS is continuing to change the IT landscape, big data’s impact on healthcare, the future of cloud, and what CIO’s need to be thinking about. Let us know if we missed anything good on Twitter @CloudGathering. Barb Darrow details the threat AWS poses to all incumbent IT departments. Basel Kayyali, David Knott, and Steve Van Kuiken reveal how big data is shaping US healthcare. Harish Ganesan helps us understand AWS Elastic Block Store in detail. Brandon Butler details how AWS, Google, Microsoft, Savvis, and Rackspace are expanding their global footprints. David Linthicum explores what cloud computing will mean in 10 years.  Shawn Douglass questions wh... (more)

Latest Cloud and Open Source Talks

Last month I was fortunate enough to give a couple of talks at OSCON. I was particularly pleased with the reception my keynote received on Creating Communities of Inclusion, which touched on some topics beyond the typical licensing and community around open source software.  I was was also asked to expand on these topics at OpenSource.com. Here are the abstracts and links to the presentations and article. OSCON Keynote: Creating Communities of Inclusion Free and open source software is equal parts technology and humanity. Beyond the coding standards, development environments and essential parts of delivering free software the ideals that drive this movement are powerful. This is a reflection on the lessons gleaned from successful F/LOSS communities and a call to action to spread their ideals to other endeavors such as medicine and government. Open Source Alternatives to LiveCycle Data Services

Clear Tookit on Ulitzer Development of enterprise Flex/Java rich Internet applications benefits from using automated data integration solutions and productivity tools. Currently Adobe offers LiveCycle Data Services ES2 (LCDS) and open source BlazeDS 3. While LCDS is certainly a great piece of software for those who are looking to support thousands of concurrent users via the most efficient communication protocols, its high licensing cost makes LCDS unaffordable for the vast majority of the enterprise applications let alone small businesses and startups. If you are looking for an alternative solution for integrating Flex and Java EE layers, consider using GraniteDS, WebOrb, and Clear Toolkit. The first two products offer their own implementation of the AMF protocol, and Clear Toolkit uses the AMF libraries that come with BlazeDS . If you are looking for an open sour... (more)

MySQL Ace To Run Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Session at Cloud Expo Mårten Mickos, the guy who sold MySQL to Sun for a billion dollars, has got himself another company. Now all he has to do is find another sucker like Sun. Mårten, who wouldn't be Mårten without that cute little Finnish doohickey over his name, has been named CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, the open source private cloud start-up. Woody Rollins, who was CEO, has morphed into the company's CFO. Since leaving Sun and MySQL last year, Mårten has been at Benchmark Capital, which backed MySQL, as entrepreneur-in-residence trying to spot his next opportunity. As it happens Eucalyptus is a Benchmark investment. Benchmark led its $5.5 million first round. Mårten says that while he was at Benchmark he asked around and people identified only two real hot buttons: the cloud and the mobile Internet. Both of them are gonna be massively big, but he fe... Is Eclipse Faster than NetBeans? By @OmniProf | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Is Eclipse Faster than Netbeans for Arquillian Testing on a Remote GlassFish Server? Part 2 While putting my test code up on GitHub and writing the readme.md, I ran my NetBeans test code on my 2011 early MacBook Pro. To my surprise the times for both embedded and remote testing were between 25 and 35 seconds. My original blog was based on working on a much much faster Windows 8.1 system that took 16 seconds for embedded but 100 seconds for remote. So I guess we blame: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Java on Windows You can download the Eclipse version of the code at: https://github.com/omniprof/JPAJSFGlassFish03Eclipse and the NetBeans version at: https://github.com/omniprof/JPAJSFGlassFish03NetBeans Some very bright people will be looking at the code and hopefully they will have an explanation for why remote server testing on Windows 8.1 performs so badly. ... The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...

We are always online. We access our data, our finances, work, and various services on the Internet. But we live in a congested world of information in which the roads were built two decades ago. The quest for better, faster Internet routing has been around for a decade, but nobody solved this problem. We’ve seen band-aid approaches like CDNs that attack a niche's slice of static content part of the Internet, but that’s it. It does not address the dynamic services-based Internet of today. It does...

Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on their mind like “How is my application doing” but no id...
