In his keynote at 19th Cloud Expo, Sheng Liang, co-founder and CEO of Rancher Labs, discussed the technological advances and new business opportunities created by the rapid adoption of containers. With the success of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and various open source technologies used to build private clouds, cloud computing has become an essential component of IT strategy. However, users continue to face challenges in implementing clouds, as older technologies evolve and newer ones like Docker c...| By Harry Trott | Article Rating: |

The developments in Google's Cloud Computing segment, especially the Cloud Machine Learning service, have been so rapid that Google calls it one of its fastest growing product areas.
Google has been ramping up their Cloud Platform quite aggressively in recent months. Just a few weeks ago, the Google Cloud Platform opened its newest zone in Tokyo, increasing the total number of regions they are present in to six - three in the US and one each in Belgium and Taiwan and Tokyo.
Not long ago, the company announced its acquisition of Orbitera, a cloud commerce company. for more than a hundred million dollars. The developments in Google’s Cloud Computing segment, especially the Cloud Machine Learning service, have been so rapid that Google calls it one of its fastest growing product areas.
This presents a unique problem to customers. On the one hand, businesses may be tempted to migrate to the Google Cloud Platform for the competitive advantages it provides over their legacy systems. But at the same time, all the aggressive ramping up of features has left customers groping in the dark for experienced trainers who can bring their users up to speed on the new platform.
Sponsor Employee Certifications
Businesses typically seek freelance trainers to train employees for various technologies. Thanks to the high demand for the Google Cloud Platform, it can either be too expensive or too difficult to book a spot with experienced trainers. One way to get around this problem is to sponsor employees to get their Google Cloud Platform certifications. This is a good way to get employees to make use of Google cloud training programs and to build their Google Cloud Platform expertise. This not only helps businesses tackle the shortage of certified trainers, it also helps businesses build their own pool of certified trainers – who could then train other employees.
Check Your Software Architecture Design
Besides employee training, migrating to the Google Cloud Platform may also come with its own set of prerequisites. When Spotify recently migrated from AWS to the Google Cloud Platform, they had to make a number of software architecture design changes. This included replacing Apache Kafka with Cloud Pub/Sub, moving away from batch processing and implementing streaming instead, with the help of Dataflow, and replacing Big Data tools like HDFS and Hive with Cloud Storage and BigQuery respectively. Depending on your own business requirements, you may need to identify the backend technology systems that will complement Google Cloud and make these necessary design changes.
Know the Limitations of Google Cloud
For all the progress that Google has made in the Cloud Platform, there is no denying the fact that enterprise businesses still look at the company as a new entrant that cannot effectively speak the enterprise language. Amazon was perhaps in the same situation a few years ago, but rapidly made a very successful transition. So, while Google takes its time to speak the language that CIOs want to hear, you will find that the Google Cloud Platform perhaps does not fulfil your needs in the way AWS or Microsoft Azure can. Prepare for contingencies for such situations so that your business is not handicapped because of the transition.
Are you a business that has recently migrated to the Google Cloud Platform? Please share your experiences in the comments below.

Monitoring of Docker environments is challenging. Why? Because each container typically runs a single process, has its own environment, utilizes virtual networks, or has various methods of managing storage. Traditional monitoring solutions take metrics from each server and applications they run. These servers and applications running on them are typically very static, with very long uptimes. Docker deployments are different: a set of containers may run many applications, all sharing the resources of one or more underlying hosts. It's not uncommon for Docker servers to run thousands of short-te...
As we enter the final week before the 19th International Cloud Expo | @ThingsExpo in Santa Clara, CA, it's time for me to reflect on six big topics that will be important during the show.
Hybrid Cloud
This general-purpose term seems to provide a comfort zone for many enterprise IT managers. It sounds reassuring to be able to work with one of the major public-cloud providers like AWS or Microsoft Azure while still maintaining an on-site presence.
There was a time, in the 1990s, when Silicon Valley and Redmond thought Washington DC didn’t matter. Top executives would occasionally appear in front of Congress to inveigh mostly against one another, then quickly return home to resume making money. The notion that clueless DC regulators and legislators mattered was ridiculed when it wasn’t ignored.
Last week I mentioned to one of my U.S.-based colleagues that I would be out of office for three days at the Irish National Digital Week (NDW16), taking the opportunity because the event was being held in Skibbereen, just a few kilometres down the road from my home office. He asked, "Surely an event of that type would be held in Dublin?" And I replied, "Well there's a story here that needs to be told; one that will have profound implications for business in Ireland and probably internationally".
Interoperability continues to be one of healthcare IT’s biggest trends in 2016 as the industry sees momentous forward movement.
In fact, interoperability is not a new trend. It has been an important mission (and a challenge) for healthcare administrators for decades, but the past couple of years have been game-changing.
First, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) wants interoperability to be a common feature in all EHRs by 2024 so that patient data can be shared across systems to provide better care at a lower cost. Since the 2009 passage of the Health Information Technolog...
Way back in 1969, as a kid, I watched a very interesting movie – “2001: A Space Odyssey”. It was a science fiction where a super intelligent computer program HAL is in-charge of a mission to Jupiter which also carries several astronauts. The program becomes rogue and tries to kill all the astronauts. The hero survives and manages to disable the program. There is a lot more to the plot, but the fight between human and computer is still vivid in my memory.
In 1969, such a scenario looked possible. After all 32 years is a lot of time given the rate of our progress. We are now in 2016, and it app...

They must figure out how to sort through the cacophony of new technologies, buzzwords, and industry hype to find the right digital path forward for their organizations. And they simply cannot afford to fail. Those organizations that are fastest to the right digital path will be the ones that win. The path forward, however, is strewn with the legacy of decisions made long ago — often before any of the current leadership team assumed their roles. While it’s fun to think about the future with a green-field mindset, that’s not reality for IT leaders sitting ...
Unless your company can spend a lot of money on new technology, re-engineering your environment and hiring a comprehensive cybersecurity team, you will most likely move to the cloud or seek external service partnerships. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Darren Guccione, CEO of Keeper Security, revealed what you need to know when it comes to encryption in the cloud.
We're entering the post-smartphone era, where wearable gadgets from watches and fitness bands to glasses and health aids will power the next technological revolution. With mass adoption of wearable devices comes a new data ecosystem that must be protected. Wearables open new pathways that facilitate the tracking, sharing and storing of consumers’ personal health, location and daily activity data. Consumers have some idea of the data these devices capture, but most don’t realize how revealing and comprehensive it can be.
Cognitive Computing is becoming the foundation for a new generation of solutions that have the potential to transform business. Unlike traditional approaches to building solutions, a cognitive computing approach allows the data to help determine the way applications are designed. This contrasts with conventional software development that begins with defining logic based on the current way a business operates.
In her session at 18th Cloud Expo, Judith S. Hurwitz, President and CEO of Hurwitz & Associates, Inc., put cognitive computing into perspective with its value to the business. The sessi...
The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to change everything by enabling “smart” environments (homes, cities, hospitals, schools, stores, etc.) and smart products (cars, trucks, airplanes, trains, wind turbines, lawnmowers, etc.). I recently wrote about the importance of moving beyond “connected” to “smart” in a blog titled “Internet of Things: Connected Does Not Equal Smart”. The article discusses the importance of moving beyond just collecting the data, to transitioning to leveraging this new wealth of IoT data to improve the decisions that these smart environments and products need to make: t...
Time and again, those keeping a pulse on the Internet of Things (IoT) space frequently hear about the “rise of the machines.” Humanity is not only discovering fascinating ways to integrate machines into our daily lives, but also finding new uses for machines as well. How? Machines are now “internet-connected” just like the smartphones we carry around in our pockets. And this isn’t just on the commercial side with the likes of smart thermostats or connected vehicles – even tractors and oil and gas machinery are industrial examples of where new “things” are now on the digital network. ...
When we talk about the impact of BYOD and BYOA and the Internet of Things, we often focus on the impact on data center architectures. That's because there will be an increasing need for authentication, for access control, for security, for application delivery as the number of potential endpoints (clients, devices, things) increases. That means scale in the data center.
What we gloss over, what we skip, is that before any of these "things" ever makes a request to access an application it had to execute a DNS query. Every. Single. Thing.
I spend a lot of time helping organizations to “think like a data scientist.” My book “Big Data MBA: Driving Business Strategies with Data Science” has several chapters devoted to helping business leaders to embrace the power of data scientist thinking. My Big Data MBA class at the University of San Francisco School of Management focuses on teaching tomorrow’s business executives the power of analytics and data science to optimize key business processes, uncover new monetization opportunities and create a more compelling, engaging customer and channel engagement.
