Technology Isn't the Answer to Surviving Digital Disruption

There's a funny thing about digital transformation: we are simultaneously
over-hyping it and understating it. On the one hand, every tech company in
the world is talking about it. It doesn't matter how mundane the technology;
every company is somehow relating their products to digital transformation.
On the other, many people are failing to grasp the import and impact of what
digital transformation really means. In far too many cases, business and IT
leaders are dismissing it as nothing more than a marketing ploy. The
unfortunate result is that the over-hypedness of digital transformation is
obscuring its real meaning.
This dichotomy is most apparent in what I call the tech company fallacy.

Successful digital transformation requires new organizational competencies
and capabilities. Research tells us that the biggest impediment to successful

The IoT continued its toddler-like growth and stumbles in 2016. Here are five
trends to look for in 2017 as the IoT enters its adolescence and how to
benefit from them.
1. Ecosystems begin to determine winners and losers
Previously these were nice in-the-future concerns; now they will really
count. Filling out a whole product value proposition through partnerships has
repeatedly proven its importance across B2B and enterprise software sectors.
In the IoT, they will be even more critical.
As an example, the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) is driving the
definition of platforms and test beds and should show results in 2017. In the
meantime, expect some IoT companies to fail when they can't gain traction.

The Jevons Paradox: How Democratization of IT Increases Demand for Cloud
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase
efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption.
Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological
improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these
improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal.

As we enter the final week before the 19th International Cloud Expo |
@ThingsExpo in Santa Clara, CA, it's time for me to reflect on six big topics
that will be important during the show.
Hybrid Cloud
This general-purpose term seems to provide a comfort zone for many enterprise
IT managers. It sounds reassuring to be able to work with one of the major
public-cloud providers like AWS or Microsoft Azure while still maintaining an
on-site presence.
But this is a complicated topic, not a simple one. The larger issue is to
avoid creating new, discrete silos of information as an enterprise develops
some apps on AWS, a PoC on-premises, and tries to deploy across hybrid and
multiple clouds. I look forward to conversations with Cloud Expo attendees
that touch on the seemingly infinite variety of hybrid cloud approaches and
options available today.

Way back in 1969, as a kid, I watched a very interesting movie - "2001: A
Space Odyssey." It was a science fiction where a super intelligent computer
program HAL is in charge of a mission to Jupiter which also carries several
astronauts. The program becomes rogue and tries to kill all the astronauts.
The hero survives and manages to disable the program. There is a lot more to
the plot, but the fight between human and computer is still vivid in my
memory.
In 1969, such a scenario looked possible. After all 32 years is a lot of time
given the rate of our progress. We are now in 2016, and it appears that
something similar may happen in the next 32 years.
Even the experts have been predicting that Artificial Intelligence or AI will
happen in next 20 years. The irony is that this prediction is being made for
more than 60 years now!

We are always online. We access our data, our finances, work, and various
services on the Internet. But we live in a congested world of information in
which the roads were built two decades ago. The quest for better, faster
Internet routing has been around for a decade, but nobody solved this
problem.
