Hot Button 2016: How DevOps and Automation Bolster Security and Compliance
As 2016 has arrived, we reflect upon one of the most debated issues around
DevOps in 2015 - Information Security (InfoSec) and compliance. Needless to
say, both are critical to an enterprise (especially given past examples of
data breaches and looming cybersecurity threats). As a result, the
combination of InfoSec and DevOps practices can be viewed as
counter-intuitive, since the ability to "go faster" can be seen as a
potential risk to security mechanisms in place, and thus harder to ensure
compliance an... (more)

How to Establish Security and Privacy "Due Diligence" in the Cloud
The traditional, on-premise computing model has established processes,
accreditations, certifications, governance and compliance rules - FISMA, NERC

addressing the technical security gaps in cloud-driven services, many
organizations using cloud services are struggling to implement and adapt
strategic processes, procedures, and controls for cloud governance and due

How do you securely enable access to your applications in AWS without
exposing any attack surfaces? The answer is usually very complicated because
application environments morph over time in response to growing requirements
from your employee base, your partners and your customers.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit, Haseeb Budhani, co-founder and CEO of Soha,
shared five common approaches that DevOps teams follow to secure access to
applications deployed in AWS, Azure, etc., and the friction and risks... (more)
@CloudExpo Stories By Elizabeth White Clearly the way forward is to move to cloud be it bare metal, VMs or containers. One aspect of the current public clouds that is slowing this cloud migration is cloud lock-in. Every cloud vendor is trying to make it very difficult to move out once a customer has chosen their cloud.
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Naveen Nimmu, CEO of Clouber, Inc., advocated that making the inter-cloud migration as simple as changing airlines would help the entire industry to quickly adopt the cloud without ... Jan. 13, 2016 07:00 AM EST Reads: 633 | By Pat Romanski Consumer IoT applications provide data about the user that just doesn’t exist in traditional PC or mobile web applications. This rich data, or “context,” enables the highly personalized consumer experiences that characterize many consumer IoT apps. This same data is also providing brands with unprecedented insight into how their connected products are being used, while, at the same time, powering highly targeted engagement and marketing opportunities.

Jan. 13, 2016 07:00 AM EST Reads: 542 | By Elizabeth White Between the compelling mockups and specs produced by analysts, and resulting applications built by developers, there exists a gulf where projects fail, costs spiral, and applications disappoint. Methodologies like Agile attempt to address this with intensified communication, with partial success but many limitations.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Charles Kendrick, CTO and Chief Architect at Isomorphic Software, presented a revolutionary model enabled by new technologies. This has been enabled by recent advances in IoT device capabilities, messaging frameworks, presence and collaboration services, where devices can share information and make independent and human assisted decisions based upon social status from other entities.

Jan. 13, 2016 05:00 AM EST Reads: 350 | By Elizabeth White As the Internet of Things becomes more capable, moving from an initial ad hoc bundle of chaos to an optimized set of interconnected assets, we will need to ensure it performs and is reliable.
But this means the tools measuring the performance and reliability of the IoT will also need to mature as the need for timely, understandable, quality, business-critical information becomes paramount. Sensors that are malfunctioning, devices that are offline, data that’s little more than noise can all scut... Jan. 13, 2016 03:15 AM EST Reads: 223 | By Liz McMillan DevOps has often been described in terms of CAMS: Culture, Automation, Measuring, Sharing. While we’ve seen a lot of focus on the “A” and even on the “M”, there are very few examples of why the “C" is equally important in the DevOps equation.
In her session at @DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, of F5 Networks, explored HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 along with Microservices to illustrate why a collaborative culture between Dev, Ops, and the Network is critical to ensuring success. Jan. 13, 2016 03:00 AM EST Reads: 160 | By Pat Romanski Automating AWS environments is important for all businesses as it simplifies creation and setup of cloud resources, facilitates otherwise complex processes, and streamlines management. The benefits of automation are clear: accelerate execution, reduce human error and unwanted consequences, and increase the enterprise’s ability to rapidly adapt, all while reducing the overall cost of IT operations.

It is critical to understand the benefits and also challenges of this migration. A successful migration will result in lower Total Cost of Ownership, yet offer the same or higher level of robustness. Migration to cloud shifts computing resources from your data center, which can yield significant advantages provided that the cloud vendor an offer enterprise-grade quality for your application. First-generation SOA with Web Services and ESBs, perhaps?
But then there's second-generation, REST-based SOA. More lightweight and cloud-friendly, but many REST-based SOA practices predate the microservices wave.
Today, microservices and containers go hand in hand – only the details of "container-oriented architecture" are largely on the drawing board – and are not likely to look much like S...
