When I was in college, I would drive the 1040 miles from Marquette Univ. in Milwaukee to my parent’s house in Rhode Island for things like summer vacation and semester break. The following are a few Big Data companies that I was keeping an eye on starting back in January of 2015 (yeah, this is NOT a statistically significant sample)….some for “old times sake” because I knew the founding team and was curious how things were progressing, some because I trust their venture capital partners, and some because they inspire me with an application of the technology that is meaningful (I’m tired of hearing about yet another “Big Data Platform”).
Nate Silver put Big Data on the map when he projected Obama’s presidential victory with such precision in 2008. Silver successfully predicted the outcomes in 49 of the 50 states in the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. And again in the 2012 United States presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Silver correctly predicted the winner of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. That seems pretty amazing given the wide variability in the projected results. Just look at the current projected Iowa caucus winners for the Republican nomination.
In the late 1990's Tom Standage released the first edition of a book that would sweep across the tech community because of its incredible analogies to the rise of the Internet hitting the world at that time. The "Victorian Internet", first released in 1998, was updated and re-released again in 2013. It provided a well written history and meaningful assessment of the rise of the Telegraph, and made very interesting observations about how the remarkable impact of the Telegraph could help us all think through what may happen as the Internet progressed.
