Retailers are under immense pressure to innovate faster. Working with them
over the years, we have come to intimately understand their challenges. With
the explosion of digital touch points and the expectation of a unified
experience throughout a shopper's journey across the channels, retailers must
innovate at an unprecedented pace while performing flawlessly even as traffic
peaks.
To maintain their edge, retailers must experiment with new ideas by deploying
new apps and features 24/7. Industry leaders, like Amazon, Staples, Walmart
and Zappos are already developing features faster than web startups do.
However, most retailers are still hampered by the complexity of Information

2016 Predictions: Mobile, Internet of APIs Economy, AI, IoT and Hybrid Cloud
With another year coming to a close, it's time to dust off the crystal ball
for our annual predictions. However, before we forecast any new insights, I
want to look back at our 2015 predictions, which could be best summarized as
a maturing of technology innovations introduced in prior years. Now that the
fundamentals are in place, there's potential for significant shifts in both
software and vendor shakeups in 2016. The emerging battleground of innovation
continues to heat up between companies that make t... (more)
When it comes to protecting their brand, there is little that any successful
company would not do. But what if the brand is being damaged just by people
being unable to find the store?
If you think of the internet as a virtual network, then DNS lookup and
resolution is like the 411 service. Websites are not located at text
addresses, but rather IP addresses – that series of numbers and decimals
that may not make any sense to you, but actually identifies the actual server
that you’re trying to contact. So when you type www.catchpoint.com into
your web browser or click on a link t... (more)
If a slow or unresponsive application on your mobile device or PC has ever
left you feeling angry, frustrated and unproductive, you're not alone.
Business success in today's digital age relies on application performance.
Yet according to the Riverbed Global Application Performance Survey 2015,
nine out of 10 organizations suffer from poor performance on a regular basis.
Executives say the poor performance of enterprise applications has negatively
impacted their work on a regular basis. Consequently, this performance gap
between the needs of the business and IT's ability to delive... (more)
Which Douglas Adam Character Represents Your DevOps Skills?
By TJ Randall
Are you someone who knows that the number one rule in DevOps is “Don’t
Panic”? Especially when it comes to making Continuous Delivery changes
inside your organization? Are you someone that theorizes that if anyone
implements real automation changes, the solution will instantly become
antiquated and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable?
Take this test to help you understand how Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhikers
Guide to the Galaxy” can be a fun way to understand your DevOps style.

Ten years ago, when I drove on Winchester Avenue in Los Gatos, I saw this new
company called Netflix that was renting DVDs of movies. You didn't have to go
to a store, but could sign up for home delivery service of DVDs. Now Netflix
is building a much bigger headquarters near its old site. It is a huge
success story – a disruption to the home entertainment business. When it
decided to switch to “streaming only” a few years back, there were lot of
doubters. But that’s all in the past. It is a global company now with huge
success as a business.

@DevOpsSummit Stories By Elizabeth White Between the compelling mockups and specs produced by analysts, and resulting applications built by developers, there exists a gulf where projects fail, costs spiral, and applications disappoint. Methodologies like Agile attempt to address this with intensified communication, with partial success but many limitations.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Charles Kendrick, CTO and Chief Architect at Isomorphic Software, presented a revolutionary model enabled by new technologies. Jan. 18, 2016 06:00 AM EST Reads: 646 | By Pat Romanski Automating AWS environments is important for all businesses as it simplifies creation and setup of cloud resources, facilitates otherwise complex processes, and streamlines management. The benefits of automation are clear: accelerate execution, reduce human error and unwanted consequences, and increase the enterprise’s ability to rapidly adapt, all while reducing the overall cost of IT operations.
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Patrick McClory, Director of Automation and DevOps at Datapipe, delved deep into the technical specifics of automation for AWS including a discussion of best prac... Jan. 18, 2016 04:00 AM EST Reads: 560 | By Elizabeth White Containers are revolutionizing the way we deploy and maintain our infrastructures, but monitoring and troubleshooting in a containerized environment can still be painful and impractical. Understanding even basic resource usage is difficult – let alone tracking network connections or malicious activity.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Gianluca Borello, Sr. Software Engineer at Sysdig, covered the current state of the art for container monitoring and visibility, including pros / cons and live demonstrations of each method. Special emphasis will be put on sysdig, an open source troubleshooting... Jan. 18, 2016 12:00 AM EST Reads: 427 | By Liz McMillan For it to be SOA – let alone SOA done right – we need to pin down just what "SOA done wrong" might be. First-generation SOA with Web Services and ESBs, perhaps?
But then there's second-generation, REST-based SOA. More lightweight and cloud-friendly, but many REST-based SOA practices predate the microservices wave.
Today, microservices and containers go hand in hand – only the details of "container-oriented architecture" are largely on the drawing board – and are not likely to look much like SOA in any case.
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Jason Bloomberg, President of Intellyx, provided... Jan. 17, 2016 08:45 PM EST Reads: 873 | By Liz McMillan Overgrown applications have given way to modular applications, driven by the need to break larger problems into smaller problems. Similarly large monolithic development processes have been forced to be broken into smaller agile development cycles. Looking at trends in software development, microservices architectures meet the same demands. Additional benefits of microservices architectures are compartmentalization and a limited impact of service failure versus a complete software malfunction. The problem is there are a lot of moving parts in these designs; this makes assuring performance compl... Jan. 17, 2016 08:30 PM EST Reads: 766 | By Aruna Ravichandran At year-end, we often consider where we’ve fallen short over the last twelve months – and how we can do better over the next twelve. For IT leaders, DevOps is likely to be a primary concern for 2016. As application awesomeness becomes more important to the business, IT must get great code into production faster. DevOps success is thus imperative – especially if you’re competing against digital-first market disrupters.
DevOps, though, isn’t just about engineering better processes. It’s also about cultural transformation. This reality makes some IT leaders uneasy, because excellence at operatio... Jan. 17, 2016 11:00 AM EST Reads: 809 | By Elizabeth White Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the backend service, and the mobile application for the end user’s controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/target – this makes the integration of these separate pipelines and the coordination of software updates for ... Jan. 17, 2016 07:30 AM EST Reads: 312 | By Elizabeth White Everyone talks about continuous integration and continuous delivery but those are just two ends of the pipeline. In the middle of DevOps is continuous testing (CT), and many organizations are struggling to implement continuous testing effectively. After all, without continuous testing there is no delivery. And Lab-As-A-Service (LaaS) enhances the CT with dynamic on-demand self-serve test topologies. CT together with LAAS make a powerful combination that perfectly serves complex software development and delivery pipelines.
