Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team
at Google.
Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web
and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices.
Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic
solution: use my server and you'll be fine.
But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just
can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as
a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the
web enjoys.
With millions of smart devices coming in the near future, are we really going
to have millions of apps? People are already "app-fatigued." There will
always be room for hero-apps like snapchat but do I really want an app for my
smart suitcase? Tha... (more)

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.

Despite last week's report that Microsoft wouldn't even show up, it's now
said that it's going to its antitrust hearing in Brussels next month.
It's reportedly going to paint Google, which is one of the complaints, as the
boogeyman to spook a European Commission already worried about Google's power
to try to deflect it from ordering Microsoft to package alternate browsers -
like Chrome and Firefox - in the Windows operating system as a remedy for
having tied its own Internet Explorer browser to Windows.
According to both the New York Times and the Financial Times - who must be

iPad on Ulitzer - There may be little left for Apple to announce about its
purported tablet or iSlate come January 27, a date change since January 26
was noised about. The rumor mill is slowly teasing out all its secrets.
The great unveiling, according to the Financial Times, is still supposed to
be at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco but now it’s
supposedly on the last Wednesday of the month rather than the last Tuesday.
The Wall Street Journal came running out late Monday with the news – shared
by “people briefed by the company” – that Apple w... (more)

Oct. 31, 2015 09:30 AM EDT Reads: 218 | By Liz McMillan Those in the industry have been working hard to sweeten the deal again - efforts have been made to bring WebRTC into the mainstream and as a result the technology is experiencing a rebirth. Thanks to those who have remained dedicated to improving the situation for those around them, WebRTC is finally starting to fulfill the original expectations that were had of it. Both the technology and the support networks have been built up to make experimenting with it again a pleasure, not a pain. WebRTC has grown up. Oct. 31, 2015 08:00 AM EDT Reads: 226 | By Carmen Gonzalez Who are you? How do you introduce yourself? Do you use a name, or do you greet a friend by the last four digits of his social security number? Assuming you don’t, why are we content to associate our identity with 10 random digits assigned by our phone company? Identity is an issue that affects everyone, but as individuals we don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it.
Oct. 31, 2015 08:00 AM EDT Reads: 245 | By Pat Romanski Beacon technology offers a new way for companies to deliver value to their customers by enabling micro-location based interaction at every physical touch point. This knowledge opens up a new playground for creating personalized services and inventing new experiences between a company and its customers, but how exactly can organizations monetize this? For the past two years we have heard about mobile notifications and messaging, but this has not taken off and could be considered spamming. Oct. 31, 2015 07:00 AM EDT Reads: 266 | By Liz McMillan DevOps is a software development method that places emphasis on communications between Software Engineering, Quality Assurance and IT Operations (SEQAITO ) with the goal to produce software and services to improve, increase the operational performance for the Enterprise.
Communications is key not only between the SEQAITO team members but also the communication between the applications and the SEQAITO team. How can an organization provide the human communication and the application communication to the SEQAITO team to ensure the successful development, deployment of the application? Oct. 31, 2015 07:00 AM EDT Reads: 258 | By Liz McMillan Contextual Analytics of various threat data provides a deeper understanding of a given threat and enables identification of unknown threat vectors.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Dufour, Head of Security Architecture, IoT, Webroot, Inc., will discuss how through the use of Big Data analytics and deep data correlation across different threat types, it is possible to gain a better understanding of where, how and to what level of danger a malicious actor poses to an organization, and to determine the measures to implement to prevent future occurrences. Oct. 31, 2015 06:00 AM EDT Reads: 459 | By Pat Romanski The security devil is always in the details of the attack: the ones you've endured, the ones you prepare yourself to fend off, and the ones that, you fear, will catch you completely unaware and defenseless. The Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing if not an endless proliferation of details. It's the vision of a world in which continuous Internet connectivity and addressability is embedded into a growing range of human artifacts, into the natural world, and even into our smartphones, appliances, and physical persons.
In the IoT vision, every new "thing" - sensor, actuator, data source, data con... Oct. 31, 2015 04:00 AM EDT Reads: 239 | By Elizabeth White For manufacturers, the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a jumping-off point for innovation, jobs, and revenue creation. But to adequately seize the opportunity, manufacturers must design devices that are interconnected, can continually sense their environment and process huge amounts of data.
As a first step, manufacturers must embrace a new product development ecosystem in order to support these products. Oct. 31, 2015 01:00 AM EDT Reads: 351 | By Carmen Gonzalez The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to evolve the way the world does business; however, understanding how to apply it to your company can be a mystery. Most people struggle with understanding the potential business uses or tend to get caught up in the technology, resulting in solutions that fail to meet even minimum business goals.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO / President / Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., showed what is needed to leverage the IoT to transform your business. He discussed opportunities and challenges ahead for the IoT from a market and technical point of vie... Oct. 30, 2015 11:00 PM EDT Reads: 211 | By Pat Romanski WebRTC services have already permeated corporate communications in the form of videoconferencing solutions. However, WebRTC has the potential of going beyond and catalyzing a new class of services providing more than calls with capabilities such as mass-scale real-time media broadcasting, enriched and augmented video, person-to-machine and machine-to-machine communications.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Luis Lopez, CEO of Kurento, will introduce the technologies required for implementing these ideas and some early experiments performed in the Kurento open source software community in areas ... Oct. 30, 2015 10:00 PM EDT Reads: 204 | By Liz McMillan The promise of IoT is to have all things connected, feeding data and pushing content and solutions. This connectivity and the data from it has the potential to provide richer customer experiences, better business results, and much more informed consumers. So what happens when we take what is personal and enhance it with technology?

Oct. 30, 2015 04:00 PM EDT Reads: 312 | By Pat Romanski There's no doubt that the Internet of Things is driving the next wave of innovation. Google has spent billions over the past few months vacuuming up companies that specialize in smart appliances and machine learning. Already, Philips light bulbs, Audi automobiles, and Samsung washers and dryers can communicate with and be controlled from mobile devices. To take advantage of the opportunities the Internet of Things brings to your business, you'll want to start preparing now.
