DevOps: Disruptive but Essential in a Cloud Computing Universe
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo--to be held November 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the heart of Silicon Valley--will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.
DevOps Summit content doubled from a single track in New York to two simultaneous tracks: "Dev" Developer Focus and "Ops" Operations Focus.
Join DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann and Host Alan Shimel, November 4-6 for three days of intense DevOps discussion and focus.
We'll see you in Santa Clara! See you in November!

By Pat Romanski How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends:
Exposing the device to a management framework
Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic
• Exposing that business layer and data to end users.
This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happens, where data lives and where the interface lies. For instance, it’s a mix of architectural style...Oct. 23, 2014 07:45 PM EDT Reads: 1,579 |

And lucky us, we’re just beginning to reap the benefits as we work toward a networked society. However, this technology-driven innovation is impacting more than just individuals. The IoT has an environmental impact as well, which brings us to the theme of this month’s #IoTuesday Twitter chat.
The ability to remove inefficiencies through connected objects is driving change throughout every sector, including waste management. BigBelly Solar, located just outside of Boston, is trans...
Predicted by Gartner to add $1.9 trillion to the global economy by 2020, the Internet of Everything (IoE) is based on the idea that devices, systems and services will connect in simple, transparent ways, enabling seamless interactions among devices across brands and sectors. As this vision unfolds, it is clear that no single company can accomplish the level of interoperability required to support the horizontal aspects of the IoE.
The AllSeen Alliance, announced in December 2013, was formed with the goal to advance IoE adoption and innovation in the connected home, healthcare, education, aut...
Read more about how AppDynamics helps foster DevOps and take five minutes to get complete visibility into the performance of your production applications with AppDynamics Pro today!
Now while we kidding around about naming this wall the "MacVittie-Roberts wall of DOOM", we weren't kidding about the need for better performance monitoring in production. After all, to definitely say that application performance is faster requires that we've measured performance after some change. You might notice that various forms of "measure" are bold. I could also italicize them, if it makes it would more clearly emphasize that measuring performance is critical to both improving and maintai...
With the growing number of CSS Preprocessors like LESS, Sass, Turbine, Stylus and Swith CSS to name a few, it’s hard to decide which to choose for your project, and which will provide the best CSS authoring. Rather than focus on evaluating every CSS Preprocessor (that would simply take too long), we will focus on the two most commonly used in the industry: Sass and LESS. We will provide a comparison on important deciding factors, like installation, features, and similarities & differences, to he...
When Instagram was sold to Facebook in 2012, it employed only 13 people and maintained over 4 billion photos shared by its 80 million registered users.
Internally, Instagram was a small business. Externally, it was a web monster. Filling the gap between those two contradictory perspectives is DevOps.
Now to be fair, Instagram (like many other web monster properties today) has it easier than most other businesses because it supported only one application. One. That's in stark contrast to large ...
Isn’t it great to treat your girlfriend by cooking her favorite omelet every morning? In theory, sure, but in reality, chances are most of the time you end up with darn scrambled eggs instead. Let’s face it: you’re a great boyfriend but a terrible cook. Believe it or not, this is quite analogous to app deployment. You can’t be sure that every one of your app deployments will be smooth sailing; every now and then you will mess up a thing or two (or a dozen) along the way.
Be it a critical urge ...
Enterprise applications are increasing in complexity, with multi-tier and distributed applications being the new standards for dealing with high-volume, high-scale requirements. In many development environments, the ideal scenario is to enable DevOps teams to manage dev/test environments in public clouds, with on-demand, usage based billing model – and to ultimately deploy these complex applications in on-premises clouds. Achieving application portability between heterogeneous cloud environments...
In my first post, I discussed how software and various tools are dramatically changing the Ops department. This post centers on the automation process.
When I was younger, you actually had to build a server from scratch, buy power and connectivity in a data center, and manually plug a machine into the network. After wearing the operations hat for a few years, I have learned many operations tasks are mundane, manual, and often have to be done at two in the morning once something has gone wrong. ...
The Internet of Things is only going to make that even more challenging as businesses turn to new business models and services fueled by a converging digital-physical world. Applications, whether focused on licensing, provisioning, managing or storing data for these "things" will increase the already significant burden on IT as a whole. The inability to scale from an operational perspective is really what software-defined architectures are attempting to solve by operationalizing the network to s...
Certainly, enterprises feel the pressure to transition their networks to next generation architectures like SDN to brace the coming storm that is an app economy. Service providers could provide valuable advice to them on how to do that, if they could yell loud enough over the thunderous roar of millions of devices being activated and apps being downloaded that continues to put pressure on them to scale out their networks.
And scale out they must if they are going to continue to keep up with a...
Cloud computing in the form of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) has revolutionized the expectations of IT. Infrastructure that used to take weeks to months to provision is now available in minutes.
Moreover, most of the traditional drawbacks associated with infrastructure have disappeared as IaaS has become more widely used. The lengthy timeframes to add infrastructure resources to existing applications, which led to wildly over-provisioned environments, have disappeared. The heavy upfront ca...
When I took my operating systems fundamentals course in college I was taught that an operating system provides very specific capabilities that provides users with access compute resources for building and running applications. Over time as networking capabilities and bandwidth increased, the notion of a set of modules that interface between the user and the…
There's fog coming to the world of IT. Some people are calling this "The Cloud."
This fog turns everything inside out. It will take your monolithic applications, the guts of which are contained within large bodies of code, and break them apart so that discrete units of functionality are contained within their own process, exposed through an interface for others to see. Complexity is moving from the inside of a few large processes to the outside of many smaller processes.
People are rightly sca...
In my hunt for the mysterious DevOps practice, I’ve been let down. DevOps are hard to find. When you find them, they do not exactly do what you think they should do. Some DevOps teams only execute on automation for dev; while others are operations folks with a new name; and still others are internal consultants helping operations and developers (but not actually doing the work). In my DevOps scavenger hunt I have identified a new type of creature; shared services (aka the unicorn)
Just last year, a CA Technologies and Vanson Bourne survey revealed that DevOps was not a sure-fire hit— 16 percent of senior IT professionals did not know what DevOps was, and an additional 18 percent had no plans to adopt it. Fast forward one year and the results tell an entirely new story. 88 percent of respondents had already adopted DevOps or plan to do so, up from 66 percent last year. In addition to senior IT professionals, this year’s respondents expanded to include senior Line-of-Busine...
DevOps is a discontinuous innovation in the way organizations develop and deliver software. And as with any new discontinuous innovation, the implication is that creative destruction will follow. Companies that hold on to legacy business and technology models, without pursuing the ever-growing number of digital market opportunities, will wither in the coming decades, supplanted by those companies which have adopted new ways of thinking and operating.
One of the more popular methods of dealing with not just with the explosion of devices but the growing challenge of dealing with growth of compute devices under management in general is virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). While VDI has been overshadowed of late by newer and shinier TLAs like SDN and IoT, it remains nonetheless a critical component of most organizations growth strategy.
As the technology behind VDI has matured, many organizations have begun to reconsider their initial, early d...
