Regardless if you’ve migrated multiple applications or this is your first migration to a public Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) you will want to run a small proof-of-concept to make sure that the basic elements of data flow operate as expected and your components will run in the IaaS environment. The Internet of Things is only going to make that even more challenging as businesses turn to new business models and services fueled by a converging digital-physical world. Applications, whether focused on licensing, provisioning, managing or storing data for these "things" will increase the already significant burden on IT as a whole. The inability to scale from an operational perspective is really what software-defined architectures are attempting to solve by operationalizing the network to shift the burden of provisioning and management from people to technology.

The information technology sphere undergoes what we like to call a paradigm shift, sea change or plain old ‘upheaval’ roughly every five years or so.
Don’t ask anybody why this half decade cyclicality exists; it just has to be so. Accept that reinvention happens constantly and that major seismic shifts are tangibly felt by us human beings roughly every 1826.21 days… and we can move on.
The phenomena of Big Data continues to grow as companies of all sizes start to realize the potential ROI that comes from the correct use of massive amounts of data. MIT found that firms who can leverage Big Data can achieve 5-6 percent greater productivity and profitability than their competitors. Knowing the most common mistakes made when handling Big Data will help your organization achieve its goals.
The evolution of the database is under constant upheaval, discussion, debate and (if you will excuse the expression) 'analysis.'
This basic truth is now more relevant, pertinent and pressing than ever due to the prevalence of Big Data (and the need to impose analytics of insight upon it) driven by social, mobile, cloud and of course the Internet of (Every) Things.
Today then, as a staple of our IT infrastructure, databases have been around for over 50 years now with first references of the term dating back to the very early 1960s. Given that whole century of data, it is only really our last ...

Labor market analytics firm Wanted Analytics recently assessed the market for technology professionals and found that demand for people with proficient levels of Hadoop expertise had skyrocketed by around 33% since last year – it is true, Hadoop is hard technology to master and the labor market is not exactly flooded with an over-abundance of skilled practitioners. Hadoop has been called a foundational technology, rather than ‘just’ a database by some commentators – this almost pushes it towards being an ‘environment’ rather than it being a single software product… and this all goes towards ma...

The Cloud 360 Bootcamp, led by Janakiram MSV, an analyst with Gigaom Research, is the first bootcamp that introduces the core concepts of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) based on the workings of the Big Three platforms - Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, and Azure VMs.

It's hard to miss the world of opportunities that data collection and analysis have opened up. But how can you avoid having information overload?
It takes a lot of will power, in our data obsessed world to say "too much!" However, there are many ways where too much information is destroying productivity, and actually causing bad decision making, not good. But it is hard to avoid the world of opportunities that has been opened in data collection and analysis. So how do you balance the two? The first step is to understand there is a big difference between data collection, and it's utilization. ...
NuoDB is all about getting customrs to the cloud. It describes itself as offering “a distributed database offering a rich SQL implementation (that is) designed for the modern datacenter, and as a scale-out cloud database.”
We talked to company CTO Seth Proctor, who is also on the faculty of @CloudExpo, about the challenges the company faces in its quest. Here is what he had to say:
Cloud Computing Journal: What have you found to be the biggest challenges in migrating customers to the cloud? How much of the challenge is technical and how much is psychological?

for storage and computing operations at scale. These capabilities allow organizations to store massive amounts of data, in disparate formats, and perform both batch and real-time analyses upon them. The forces driving Big Data into the mainstream are the ever-decreasing cost of storage and processing, coupled with the open source enhancements of distributed systems techniques and software. Companies have realized that data storage is on the verge of being limitless, and they no longer need to be as judicious about what kinds of data they store. This realization has led to the storage of all ma...
