Morphlabs, a member of the OpenStack Foundation that produces integrated Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms, has launched mCloud Osmium, a modular OpenStack-powered public cloud platform that service providers can use to implement highly scalable public clouds quickly without the usual R&D or serious capital expenditures.
It's a scalable multi-tenant public cloud solution with built-in billing software that's supposed to let SPs compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on price and performance.
Using its highly configurable structure, Morphlabs says SPs can begin building public cloud infrastructures in 100 vCPU and 15TB blocks that scale as needed. The compute block runs $1,000 and the storage block $1,500. TCO over four years is advertised as being $115,000.

The company says mCloud Osmium eliminates complex software licensing so service providers can simply subscribe to the software for $10/vCPU/month and $100/TB/month to begin offering OpenStack-driven public cloud solutions.
Morphlabs says it's a third the price of Amazon. It figures the widgetry, which also beats out Rackspace pricing, offers SPs a 60% margin. Unlike Amazon, bandwidth is bundled.
The company has also upgraded its modular enterprise-ready private cloud platform. mCloud Helix 2.0 offers 2.5 times the compute power in the same 2U footprint as its predecessor, moving from 80vCPU to 200vCPU and 3TB to 4TB. Scalability of the mCloud Helix 2.0 has increased to up to 2,000 vCPU. It's available as both an on-premise and hosted product.
Dell worked with Morphlabs on the mCloud Helix to produce a turnkey system using Dell's blade servers and Crowbar cloud software and started selling the thing last fall.
Morphlabs says it "has maintained a consistent philosophy toward cloud computing throughout our existence - one that is based on delivering both price/performance and ease-of-use. With mCloud Osmium, we are empowering service providers to compete head-to-head with Amazon Web Services, offering a solution that has a low barrier to entry and out-performs AWS, while still providing the scalability necessary to grow your business. The mCloud Helix 2.0 keeps with our original density and efficiency goals, while increasing capacity and performance, further lowering the barrier to entry in the private cloud space and increasing utility."
Morphlabs has a mCloud Osmium private beta trial at www.morphlabs.com.
