Microsoft is on the brink of buying Skype for better than $7 billion,
according to an unconfirmed report in the Wall Street Journal Monday night.
Speculation last week centered on Facebook or Google doing a deal with the
Internet phone company that eBay regretted buying a few years ago after it
paid $3.1 billion in cash and stock for the joint.
Reuters thought Facebook might pay $3 billion-$4 billion for the company, but
it seemed both Facebook and Google would have preferred some kind of joint
venture.
Skype has issues with the legitimacy of the VP7 video
compression/decompression IP that it licensed from Google property On2
Technology and seemed to be shying away from the supposedly billion-dollar
IPO it signed up for last year, especially after it brought in a new CEO from
Cisco, Tony Bates.

It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
