Texas-based Convey Computer Corporation, a pioneer in hybrid-core computing – a technology designed to help high-performance computers run faster on less energy – has gotten $24.15 million in Series B financing.
The round was led by new investor Braemar Energy Ventures. The Series A crowd, CenterPoint Ventures, Intel Capital, InterWest Partners, Rho Ventures and Xilinx, also participated.
Convey was founded in 2006 and introduced its product, the Convey HC-1, in beta this past November. To date, it’s gotten $39.25 million in venture funding.
Its widgetry is supposed to boost the performance of high-performance computers by 5x-25x (depending on the application) while reducing the number of servers required. One rack of Convey servers can replace as many as eight racks of traditional application servers, which means that customers can realize dramatically lower power and cooling costs.
It’s also supposed to reduce programming challenges.
Designed around the philosophy that “the system that is simpler to program wins,” the Convey system relies on ANSI-standard C, C++ and Fortran development tools.
It says the use of a standard development environment gives programmers 100% productivity and portability – claiming the attribute is unique to Convey.
The Convey HC-1, said to marry the low cost and simple programming model of a commodity system with the performance of customized hardware architecture, tightly integrates Xeon processors and Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Arrays.
The company’s co-founders and many on its team hail from Convex Computer Corporation, which HP bought in 1995.
Production units will be available this quarter and, with the new capital, Convey plans to increase production as well as expand its global presence.
Its customers are in oil and gas, bioinformatics, seismic research and the government.
According to InterSect 360 (née Tabor Research), HPC was a $7.5 billion market in 2008.
Convey figures that if 10% of this market is looking for alternatives to what’s shipping today – as it believes they are – it’s a great opportunity for a new computer company.
