According to a survey released June 1 by Microsoft Certified Partner Port80 Software, 53.8% of all Fortune 1000 company Web sites are powered by Windows and Microsoft's IIS servers, while only 21.2% of these giant companies use Apache and other open source software to run their corporate Web presences. This means these companies offer a huge potential market for FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) vendors and service providers.

Like nearly every other person who has contributed to this series, I have tinkered around with my share of Linux distributions. I happened on Linux From Scratch (LFS) about an year and a half ago. With LFS, my choices run deep into the system -- into matters such as which shell to run, what feature of glibc to use, and how to tailor boot scripts. LFS 6.0, which is what I have built my system around, comes with gcc 3.4.1 (which is used to build everything else), a fairly recent CVS build of gcc 2.3.4 (which the LFS team provides for download), kernel 2.6.8.1, and udev.

koffice.org announced - The KDE Project today announced the immediate release of KOffice 1.4rc1, the first release candidate release for KOffice 1.4, scheduled for release later this month. KOffice is an integrated office suite for KDE which utilizes free and open standards for its document formats, component communication and component embedding.
