(1) Attaching a device by wire to a data or power source.
(2) To extend Internet access from one device to another (smartphone, tablet or computer). In the past, tethering meant connecting only by cable; however, today, depending on the device, the term includes connections via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and Ethernet. See cellular hotspot.
