Does the Future Lie with Embedded BI?
At the onset of 2015 it seems that Business Intelligence software has become
a nearly consensual part of any data-driven organization. Today companies
large and small are realizing, more than ever, that "data is power", and that
harnessing this power requires the right tools for the job.
But in the near future we might see BI take another direction: Rather than
companies merely purchasing dashboard reporting software for the purposes of
internal usage, we'll be seeing a surge in companies looking to integrate
advanced analytics and reporting into their own products. Welcome to the
world of embedded analytics.
What Embedded BI is All About
Simply put, embedded analytics (or embedded BI) means adding features
normally associated with BI software - such as dashboard reporting, data
visualization and analytics tools - to existing ap... (more)
You've heard the great promise of business intelligence: data visualization
will completely change the way you think about your business. We strive for
those life-altering "aha" moments that completely shift the way we think, and
help move us forward in a way we just couldn't before due to a lack of
knowledge, clarity or inspiration. But how can data visualization promise to
give us more of those moments?
Data visualization, the graphical representation of data and information, can
help you discover trends, patterns and correlations in your businesses that
might otherwise go unseen. It makes meaningful insights easier to spot,
epiphanies more common to come by, and helps you create a business story that
you can use as a springboard for smart change and success.

Kin Lane recently wrote a couple of blogs about why copyrighting an API is
not common. I couldn’t agree more that copyrighting APIs is uncommon. First
of all, the API definition is just an interface (It is the implementation
detail that is important, and needs to be guarded), so it doesn’t make any
sense to copyright an interface. (It is almost like copyrighting a pretty
face ). Secondly, the whole idea of exposing an API is you are looking for
others to finish the work you started by just providing the plumbing work.
Why would anyone want to get involved with a copyrighted API and finish your
work for you?
Kin Lane says, “API copyright would prevent the reuse and remix of common
or successful API patterns within a space. We are at a point where
aggregating common, popular APIs into single, standardized interfaces is
emerging as the next evolution in web and mobil... (more)
A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They're called
Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based
Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact
on the data center and on server computing in general.
What Is a Microserver...and What Isn't
Although few people are familiar with Microservers today, their impact will
be felt very soon. This is a new category of computing platform that is
available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some
years to come - growing to over 20% of the server market by 2016 according to
Oppenheimer ("Cloudy With A Chance of ARM" Oppenheimer Equity Research
Industry Report).
According to Chris Piedmonte, CEO of Suvola Corporation - a software and
services company focused on creating preconfigured and scalable Microserver

The good news about the Big Data market is that we generally all agree on the
definition of Big Data, which has come to be known as data that has volume,
velocity and variety where businesses need to collect, store, manage and
analyze in order to derive business value or otherwise known as the "4 V's."
However, the problem with such a broad definition is that it can mean
different things to different people once you start to put some real values
next to those V's.
Let's be honest, Volume can be a different thing to different organizations.
To some it is anything above 10 terabytes of managed data in their BI
environment and to others it is petabyte scale and nothing less. Likewise
velocity can be multi-billions of daily records coming into the enterprise
from various external and internal networks. When it really comes down to it,
each business situation will be qu... (more)
In an Open Letter published yesterday, September 2, 2013, on The Official
Microsoft Blog at Microsoft's TechWeb site, Steve Ballmer and Stephen Elop
wrote to Microsoft stakeholders the following:
"Nokia and Microsoft have always dreamed big – we dreamed of putting a
computer on every desk, and a mobile phone in every pocket, and we’ve come
a long way toward realizing those dreams.
Today marks a moment of reinvention.
Nokia has an identity spanning 150 years of heritage, innovation, excellence,
and change which began and will continue in Finland and around the world.
From humble beginnings as a paper mill factory, to manufacturing rubber boots
and car tires, and then to mobile phones, reinvention is in Nokia’s blood.
Nokia will now write its next chapter, focused on enabling mobility through
its leadership in networking, mapping & location, and advanced technologies.

When talking with the less-technical people in your enterprise, which may
include end users and many others on the leadership team, it always pays to
have non technical expressions to describe new capabilities.
Here are some thoughts on Platfora that may be of use in discussions like
that.
Here is how to describe Platfora to a non-technical person:
Platfora gives users a better ability to interact with information. They can
ask their own questions, follow their own theories, run their own
“what-if” scenarios, and ask unbounded questions in iterative ways over
their data. To a user, Platfora provides subsecond-interactive, responsive
visualizations and analytical tools. Users can interact with data even before
they know what they are looking for. To a user, Platfora is a fast,
interactive analytical tool that lets them make sense over more data than
they ever though... (more)
"Big Data analytics will shape the form of nearly every process going forward
in time, from the color of the latest fashions, what the candidates say in
one town versus another to the chemical composition of the latest super
drug," noted Steve Knodl, Director of Product Management at NextIO, in this
exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. "Whether these
are considered "new" products," Knodl continued, "or continuous improvement
on previous processes is largely in the eyes of the beholder."
Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? - "While the IT savings aspect is
compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances
business agility."
Steve Knodl: Disagree. The cost savings is what brings agility to the masses
and grows the market. Without both aspects, cloud computing is just expensive
outsourcing. Large cash-rich firms co... (more)
