JEREMY GEELAN: I've got to ask you, and I know that everyone watching this
interview Web-wide on SYS-CON.TV wants me to ask you: are you fed up at all
with being "The Father of the Term AJAX"? - because you don't look it...
GARRETT: No, no, not at all. It's been fun. It's been really great for me
to have the opportunity to talk to people all over the world and it's so
exciting to me what's happening with AJAX and with the evolution of Web
technology. I'm excited to be a part of it and so many of the people that I
talk to, people at events like this one, are excited to be a part of it, too.
That energy is what keeps me going.
GEELAN: Let's just talk, because I know it's a lovely story and you told it
in your keynote this morning. There you were coining this term in your little
February essay last year, and you go on a trip, not knowing that anything
would happen.

One of the issue mentioned in our the Adobe AIR 1.1 release notes is an issue
where Firefox is not used as the default web browser on Vista. From the
technote: On Windows Vista, web pages opened from AIR applications (this is
done by calling the navigateToURL() method) may not open the default browser;
it always [...]

I'm pretty busy this period in writing the O'Reilly AIR Cookbook.
Unfortunately the book won't be out for this summer but if you want to learn
how to create cool desktop application with AIR using Flash, the well known
David Tucker (the main author of the AIR Cookbook) has released a video
coruse for Lynda.com site:
AIR for Flash Developers
with: David Tucker
Rich internet applications become more popular and powerful every year, but
they have been limited to what can be done from within a web browser. Adobe
AIR allows web developers to leverage their Flash, Flex, HTML, and AJAX
skills to create multi-platform desktop applications. In AIR for Flash
Developers, David Tucker uses Flash CS3 Professional to create several AIR
applications, exploring the workflow and features of the AIR extension and
runtime along the way. He discusses how to integrate with an operating ... (more)
Firstly - thanks to everyone who has reached out to me in the last three
weeks via email, phone calls and comments since I shared the news of my
leaving Bungee Labs - I have really appreciated everyone's support and
interest in my next steps.
The great news is I'll be joining Intuit as a Group Manager working in a fast
growing start-up team responsible for leading the company's
Platform-As-a-Service (PaaS) strategy. Below is a snippet and some links to
blog posts and articles that should give you a fairly good idea about where
my focus will be a week from now.
Although I'll be working from the Orem office (Utah) to start off with, the
plan is to ultimately move to the greater Boston area - another new
adventure. I've visited Boston three times in the last year or so and have
loved it more and more with each visit, so watch out Boston!
This is a fantastic opportunit... (more)

The common thoughts about why not to use Flex is that it is not accessible to
all users. But this is in fact a myth as Adobe Flex claims to be able to
create the most accessible rich internet applications (RIAs). It has 28
components that can be used which are all accessible and create a consistent
and usable experience for users with disabilities. Components such as:
Button, Accordion, List, Slider, ToolTipManager, Tree, ColorPicker and
DateField.

Salesforce's DreamForce developer conference opens Monday morning with the
announcement of a new Force.com Sites service. Sites is a new business for
Salesforce, potentially extending the thousands of Force.com applications by
pushing application data to the Web over Salesforce servers. In doing so,
Salesforce becomes even more of a channel for larger cloud players such as
Google and Amazon, and even Microsoft to the extent that Force.com developers
are free to integrate services such as Mesh and even Silverlight. Although
Marc Benioff dismisses such an alliance, he'll have to work fast to expand
Force.com outward as Microsoft comes after him from the outside in. Fertile
ground may lie in harnessing Google apps and realtime services to populate
Sites-enabled applications with smart information services based on targeted
user behavior derived from Gmail, Google Reade... (more)
I have just posted a new build and zip file of the ActionScript 3 CoreLib
Library (as3corelib). This in an open source library that contains a number
of classes and utilities for working with ActionScript 3.
This is release .92 and includes a number of bug and performance fixes, as
well as some new functionality.
One thing to note is that we have added support for some AIR specific
classes. Anything in the com.adobe.air package will only run within Adobe
AIR. I am looking to do the same for Flex classes, which would make it much
easier to determine which classes work where. The majority of the classes do
not require Flex or AIR.
You can download the new build, which includes the SWC, source and api docs
from the project page.
If you find any issues, please make sure to log them on the issues page. If
you would like to contribute to the project, we are always looking ... (more)

Given the number of frameworks now available for rich Internet application

decision. Inside RIA recently completed an online survey that asked
