Cloud Expo Early Bird Savings
A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing.
Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active
players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we
identified back in January of this year, to half as many again - testimony,
if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the
"Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites cited. As ever we encourage software engineers, developers, IT
operations managers, and new/growing companies in every case to "suck it and
see" by downloading or otherwise sampling the offering in question for
themselves.

This year we have seen almost every company, every blogger and his duck,
feverishly posting their "annual predictions" before the December 31
deadline, as if there is such a deadline, and as if anyone cares about what
they think in most cases.
This is followed by a dozen or so 'paid' predictions news
releases every day by companies who are pushing their "wish lists from
2010" as "predictions" and hoping that they come true.
If you do a quick Google search on "2010 predictions" you will land on a
predictions potpourri of more than 5,000 stories (the last time I looked).
I especially enjoyed Fly Fishing Predictions for 2010, Identity Theft 2010
Predictions, The 2010 NFL Mock Draft Predictions, and Plastic Surgery
Predictions for 2010.
You even have the predictions of the "magazine industry" here. What magazine
industry? I didn't know dinosaurs ma... (more)

There is little doubt that cloud computing is big news, but who is gaining
your mind share? Amazon, NetSuite, and Salesforce.com, have been in the
news recently with a number of announcements.
So many that I've been attempting to track them by creating specific journals
for each.
Our experiences are likely to be different, and barring actual surveys and
research, is subjective and based largely on our own impressions and
perceptions of which companies are in the news or making news in this
segment.
There are several lists that are excellent points of reference - The Top 150
Players in Cloud Computing, 85 Cloud Computing Vendors Shaping the Emerging
Cloud, and The VAR Guy's SaaS 20 Index.
Large technology companies like AT&T;, EMC / VMware, HP, IBM, Microsoft,
Unisys, and others that come to mind have not been included below in the top

For its next trick, the unquenchable, super-ambitious Google is gonna try
taking over the US government.
On Tuesday, after the first federal CIO Vivek Kundra unveiled Apps.gov, a
thinly populated, GSA-managed, almost completely salesforce.com- and
Google-dominated web store where federal agencies are supposed to go to get
GSA-sanctioned cloud applications and “coming soon” infrastructure
services as well as free software like YouTube, Facebook and MySpace, Google
said that by next year it would have a government-specific version of Google
Apps that meet security requirements and complies with the Federal
Information security Management Act (FISMA) and such.
It’s also working on a government cloud, set for debut in 2010, that
promises to keep the data inside the United States of America operated by
people with security clearances.
Then there’s Google for the Public ... (more)

Appirio Tuesday launched a cloud-based professional service automation (PSA)
solution on Salesforce.com’s Force.com platform.
Called simply Professional Services Enterprise, it’s supposed to be
designed for the most sophisticated professional service organizations,
delivering end-to-end support for managing people, projects, customers and
transactions.
Appirio claims that the widgetry is different from other solutions in
supporting a services business end-to-end, bridging the gap between how
projects are sold and how they are delivered. And then of course there are
the cloud’s TCO advantages.
It says it can help you make your numbers: As the quarter closes in, services
executives can identify a project that has been booked but not scheduled, and
assign resources to accelerate the project’s delivery to meet the
quarter’s sales goals.
It also says it can help put th... (more)
