Early Bird Savings at Cloud Expo
(September 12, 2008) - Originally, Cloud Computing was a vague term for a
very vague and distant future in which computing would occur in a few remote
locations without the need for very much human intervention. Infinite
computing resources would be available for any need at costs approaching
zero. Certainly, users would not need to know or care about how the
computers, their software, or the network functioned.
In the real world, physical computing progressed differently. We cycled
between periods when computing was more centralized (and seemed more remote
and less accessible to users) and other periods when computing was right on
user desktops. No one was ever satisfied. Centralized computing failed to
give users enough control and was too inflexible. Distributed computing made
every user his own system administrator and was very i... (more)
VMware is scheduled today to announce the industry’s first cloud operating
system ahead of delivering the thing sometime before the end of June.
Branded vSphere 4, the expected widgetry, which promises a 100% virtualized
cloud, is meant to reinforce VMware’s virtualization leadership and push it
out further ahead of Microsoft, which is nipping at its heels.
VMware has, for instance, segmented the stuff so that the low end is now
priced considerably lower than its current generation to attract SMBs lest
Microsoft pick them off with its “freeware.”
Meanwhile vSphere’s feature-packed upper end will court the enterprise and
the hosting service providers.
vSphere is the basis of what VMware calls a private cloud and defines not
just as an internal cloud but rather as an internal cloud federated with an
external cloud or clouds for added capacity.

HTTP session management is a function offered by Java Enterprise Edition
(JEE) application servers. It allows JEE applications to store state
information about a given user across many HTTP requests. The JEE
specification provides an API to store and retrieve information specific to
the given user. WebSphere application servers and other competing products,
provide session replication functionality. This is normally done either by
writing to a database or through memory-to-memory replication technology.
These approaches while extensively used today, have operational challenges
and cost implications. HTTP session replication enables for seamless session
recovery, in event of an application failure, but we currently do not have a
reliable, predictable and cost effective solution to handle session recovery
in event of a data center failure. Until now we have discourag... (more)
Ask someone to associate IBM and cloud computing, and that person will
probably come back with something about solutions to help build private
clouds. I know because I ask... all the time. On the surface, this is a fair
association. After all, it is true that IBM offers quite a few different
solutions that help users to build both private clouds and on-premise clouds
that they then offer up to others (i.e. enabling service providers). However,
it does not participate in this cloud delivery model at the expense of other
delivery models.
In fact, IBM has a wide-breadth of cloud solutions, including those that fit
in private, hybrid, and yes, even public cloud categories. While it may be
the case that the private, and thanks to a recent high-profile acquisition,
hybrid cloud solutions are the best known of the bunch, it is a misperception
to characterize IBM as only f... (more)
Keith Lea writes of the benchmark, on his results page, "I was sick of
hearing people say Java was slow, when I know it's pretty fast, so I took the
benchmark code for C++ and Java from the now outdated Great Computer Language
Shootout and ran the tests myself."
Lea used G++ (GCC) 3.3.1 20030930 (with glibc 2.3.2-98) for the C++, with the
-O2 flag (for both i386 and i686). He compiled the Java code normally with
the Sun Java 1.4.2_01 compiler, and ran it with the Sun 1.4.2_01 JVM. He ran
the tests on Red Hat Linux 9 / Fedora Test1 with the 2.4.20-20.9 kernel on a
T30 laptop. The laptop "has a Pentium 4 mobile chip, 512MB of memory, a sort
of slow disk," he notes.
The results he got were that Java is significantly faster than optimized C++
in many cases.
"They also show that no one should ever run the client JVM when given the
choice," Lea adds. ("Everyone has the c... (more)
I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?
Eric Miraglia of Yahoo!
1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the
iPhone SDK vs using AJAX?
2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to
make it faster?
3. When it comes to accessibility, how do I know what's required of me for
my rich web apps? Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... (more)

When we encounter a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, we often find that Java heap
dumps, along with other artifacts, are generated by the Java Virtual Machine.
If you feel like jumping right into a Java heap dump when you get a
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, don't worry, it's a normal thought. You may be
able to discover something serendipitously, but it's not always the best idea
to analyze Java heap dumps, depending on the situation you are facing. We
first need to investigate the root cause of the java.lang.OutOfMemoryError.
Only after the root cause is identified can we decide whether or not to
analyze Java heap dumps. What is a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError? Why in the
world does it occur? Let's find out.
What Is a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError?
A java.lang.OutOfMemoryError is a subclass of java.lang.VirtualMachineError
that is thrown when the Java Virtual Machine is broken or... (more)

At SYS-CON Media we see our inventories are filling up to 100% capacity for
the months of November, December, and January, and we are seeing
better-than-normal RFP activity for the first quarter of 2010.
When I say this, I am comparing the current insertion order activity to the
same period last year. We will be closing 2009 roughly 32% below 2008 in
revenues (far better than any other tech media company), which forced us to
reduce our expenses for the same period by around 40%. Last fall, while the
world was falling apart, we were preparing for a 40%-45% drop in advertising
revenues for 2009. We did better than our worst projections.

CloudEXPO Stories By Zakia Bouachraoui The precious oil is extracted from the seeds of prickly pear cactus plant. After taking out the seeds from the fruits, they are adequately dried and then cold pressed to obtain the oil. Indeed, the prickly seed oil is quite expensive. Well, that is understandable when you consider the fact that the seeds are really tiny and each seed contain only about 5% of oil in it at most, plus the seeds are usually handpicked from the fruits. This means it will take tons of these seeds to produce just one bottle of the oil for commercial purpose. But from its medical properties to its culinary importance, skin lightening, moisturizing, and protection abilities, down to its extraordinary hair care properties, prickly seed oil has got lots of excellent rewards for anyone who pays the price.
