Programming Web Services with Scripting Languages:Easy Steps, Elegant Methods

Web services is an emerging Internet programming paradigm that enables the remote invocation of software objects among heterogeneous systems over the Internet. There are two sides to Web services programming. On one side is the creation and deployment of Web service objects onto Internet servers; on the other side is the consumption of Web service objects in client programs or server applications. Due to the language-neutrality of the Web services paradigm, Web services can be created or consumed with different kinds of programming languages, including scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Tcl, and PHP. In this article, I'll explain and demonstrate the use of scripting to rapidly create and readily consume Web services over the Internet. Web Services Background Generally, the concept of "Web services" represents an enabling architecture for wide-area distribute... (more)

Autonomic SOA Web Services - Achieving Fully "Business-Conscious" IT Systems

Service-oriented architectures (SOA) and autonomic computing are among the hottest topics in IT today. SOA simplifies integration and facilitates the componentization of enterprise-wide systems, thereby enabling optimal business agility. Autonomic computing allows these systems to operate without human intervention - through self-configuring, self-healing, and self-managing capabilities. By combining autonomic computing with SOA, enterprises can now achieve a new IT utopia, named "Autonomic SOA." However, this new level of autonomic computing goes beyond just reacting to traditional IT issues, such as increasing the speed to diagnose, repair, and prevent future issues. Autonomic SOA is also able to respond dynamically as changes occur within business conditions and processes, thereby empowering enterprises everywhere to achieve flawless execution on a daily basis. ... My Thoughts on Ulitzer

Ok, so, here are my thoughts on Ulitzer... As a blogger, I focus on traffic and I spend quite a lot of time optimizing my SEO. Since the target audience of my articles is much greater than the reach of my blog, Ulitzer is actually helping me increase my content reach. Moreover, Ulitzer does it in a very fair way since links back to my posts or other locations are without the evil "nofollow" - providing a nice SEO boost. It also gives me some good metrics that are very useful data points on the effectiveness of my blog articles. And last but not least, it allows my article to appears in the news listings of the two major search engines, which is a very nice channel extension. So, all of this means that, while Ulitzer might be seen as a competing channel to bloggers, I think that bloggers should realize the tremendous value it could bring to their blog. I think to mater... Inducing Behavioral Adaptations Within SOA and Web Services

Web services have evolved from plain application-integration enablers to value-added stand-alone functionality providers such as getting a quote to a comprehensive business function like processing orders. Enterprises are exploiting this new revenue model by offering such business functions as services on usage basis. Information sharing instances such as Amazon's e-commerce services have helped in the creation of new powerful solutions using business functions as services. Why Do We Need Adaptation in Web Services? In the vision of e-business, it becomes important to address the dynamic nature of business environments. As third parties access more and more business functions, the richness of Web services offered should be adequately addressed. With Web services having to participate and cooperate in a networked system, they may need to frequently join or leave a pro... (more)

Cloud Computing: What NOT to Do

A shift is finally occurring in the Cloud Computing discourse. Topics like "what is it" have been supplanted by more useful questions such as "should I do it?", "how should I do it?", and "when should I do it?" In appreciation of this new phase of Cloud Computing adoption, we'd like to offer some thoughts on some of the common pitfalls of both public and private Clouds so that you might avoid them as you evaluate and implement cloud solutions. 1. Not understanding the business value It's important to weigh a Cloud solution versus the traditional approach through the lens of business value. If this is an existing service, can the Cloud truly provide a better solution than what you're currently doing? If new, what are the important business requirements that may drive you to select a Cloud deployment model? In the event of a service outage or a security breech, what's ... (more)

Using HTML5 Application Cache to Create Offline Web Applications

HTML5 introduces Application Cache, a new feature that enables you to make web apps and sites available offline. The new specification also provides an easy way to prefetch some or all of your web app's assets (HTML files, images, CSS, JavaScript, and so on) while the client is still online. During this caching process, files are stored in an application cache, where they sit ready for future offline use. Compare this to regular browser caching, in which pages that you visit are cached in the browser's cache based on server-side rules and client-side configuration. But-even if web pages are cached normally, this does not provide a reliable way for you to access pages while you're in offline mode (in an airplane, for example). In addition, an application cache can cache pages that have not been visited at all and are therefore typically unavailable in the regular br... (more)

Software Best Practices: Use Cases Are for Everyone

What Are Use Cases and Who Uses Them? Use Cases are NOT just for requirements gathering by project managers. They're far too useful to be relegated to that niche. For those not familiar with use cases, you can look up various confusing definitions which make reference to UML diagrams and such - but generally speaking in the world of software design, they describe how a person interacts with a piece of software. For example, a use case for Amazon.com might describe how a user searches for a book title.  Ultimately, use cases when collected together describe how software is used, who uses it, what problems get solved with it, why customers buy it, and other such bits of knowledge which are critical to creating Great Software. Use cases in their myriad formats and derivations are a primary tool in software marketing, software product management, executive management. In ... (more)

Modern software design has fundamentally changed how we manage applications, causing many to turn to containers as the new virtual machine for resource management. As container adoption grows beyond stateless applications to stateful workloads, the need for persistent storage is foundational - something customers routinely cite as a top pain point. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Bill Borsari, Head of Systems Engineering at Datera, explored how organizations can reap the bene...
"NetApp's vision is how we help organizations manage data - delivering the right data in the right place, in the right time, to the people who need it, and doing it agnostic to what the platform is," explained Josh Atwell, Developer Advocate for NetApp, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...

He has experience with brick and mortar data centers as well as cloud providers like Digital Ocean, Amazon Web Services, and Rackspace. H...
Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn’t actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. In his session at DevOps Summit, Gordon Haff, Senior Cloud Strategy Marketing and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat, will discuss why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices ra...
In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Scott Davis, CTO of Embotics, discussed how automation can provide the dynamic management required to cost-effectively deliver microservices and container solutions at scale. He also discussed how flexible automation is the key to effectively bridging and seamlessly coordinating both IT and developer needs for component orchestration across disparate clouds – an increasingly important requirement at today’s multi-cloud enterprise.
The Software Defined Data Center (SDDC), which enables organizations to seamlessly run in a hybrid cloud model (public + private cloud), is here to stay. IDC estimates that the software-defined networking market will be valued at $3.7 billion by 2016. Security is a key component and benefit of the SDDC, and offers an opportunity to build security 'from the ground up' and weave it into the environment from day one. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Reuven Harrison, CTO and Co-Founder of Tufin, ...
DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm. In their Day 3 Keynote at 20th Cloud Expo, Chris Brown, a Solutions Marketing Manager at Nutanix, and Mark Lav...
Many organizations are now looking to DevOps maturity models to gauge their DevOps adoption and compare their maturity to their peers. However, as enterprise organizations rush to adopt DevOps, moving past experimentation to embrace it at scale, they are in danger of falling into the trap that they have fallen into time and time again. Unfortunately, we've seen this movie before, and we know how it ends: badly.
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is a common and reliable transmission protocol on the Internet. TCP was introduced in the 70s by Stanford University for US Defense to establish connectivity between distributed systems to maintain a backup of defense information. At the time, TCP was introduced to communicate amongst a selected set of devices for a smaller dataset over shorter distances. As the Internet evolved, however, the number of applications and users, and the types of data accessed and...
