Strategic DevOps - How Advanced Testing Brings Broad Benefits to Independent
Health
The next BriefingsDirect Voice of the Customer digital business
transformation case study highlights how Independent Health in Buffalo, New
York has entered into a next phase of "strategic DevOps."
After a two-year drive to improve software development, speed to value, and
improved user experience of customer service applications, Independent Health
has further extended advanced testing benefits to ongoing apps production and
ongoing performance monitoring.
Learn here how the reuse of proven performance scripts and replaying of
synthetic transactions that mimic user experience have cut costs and gained
early warning and trending insights into app behaviors and system status.
Here to describe how to attain such new strategic levels of DevOps benefits

With big corporations moving to the cloud for their computation needs, a new
type of resource usage model has come up recently that is called Server-less
Computing. Contrary to the meaning of the term “Server-less” in
“Server-less Computing,” it does not mean that servers are not involved.
Rather, it means that the developer is no longer required to worry about
provisioning and maintaining servers.
Server-less pushes the focus of the developer to adding features to their
applications, instead of working on the underlying infrastructure. The
concept behind this form of computation is that any web app, or rather any
workflow can be broken into multiple subtasks. These subtasks can then be
composed to perform the required actions. Thinking in terms of subtasks helps
the developers break down the monolithic application into several functional
components that can be sc... (more)
Fast-paced changes in the business landscape demand enterprises to rethink
their existing business models and add innovative capabilities keeping in
mind the new imperatives. One among them is the focus on Digital
transformation. In the retail industry, growth is measured in terms of
increased sales and value addition to existing products while keeping
customer expectations in mind. This is where a digital focus is important to
remain competitive.
Surviving the Competition
Surviving in a highly competitive marketplace needs more than just the
ability to sell; it calls for the evaluation of existing business processes
for identifying bottlenecks/loopholes, the creation of more robust frameworks
for improving operational efficiency, and more importantly convergence of
evolved technologies, processes and enterprise solutions in the system for
delivering transformation... (more)

Two and a half years ago, when he stepped in to help Oracle get back into the
application server business, Thomas Kurian had quite a tough row to hoe. Now
he has 19,000 customers. JDJ explores with Kurian his 30-month journey, and
asks too about other aspects of emerging technology seen from the Oracle
perspective.
In JDJ last month, Sun's Jonathan Schwartz claimed the "death" of middleware,
so my first question to Thomas Kurian is inevitable, given his role as a
champion of middleware for Oracle. What does he make of Schwartz's claim?
"Those who say such things are being facetious," replies Kurian, bluntly. "A
company that says that there is no role for middleware means it in the sense
that it feels its own operating systems incorporate middleware facilities.
Such a company is bundling proprietary middleware into the OS as a vehicle to
try and lock c... (more)
DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix
Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real pu... (more)
DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us.
The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days.
We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually
standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people!
My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with
RingCentral on Devops for BigData.
I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why
DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant
colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.
The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile
Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and
tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery
pipeline, from code changes to production updates.
Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)

The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.

DevOps Summit 2015 New York, co-located with the 16th International Cloud
Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY
- announces that it is now accepting Keynote Proposals.
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo will expand the DevOps community, enable a
wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers
alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development
time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support
time generally. Tim... (more)
"Application monitoring and intelligence can smooth the path in a DevOps
environment. In a DevOps environment you see constant change.
If you are trying to monitor things in a constantly changing environment,
you're going to spend a lot of your job fixing your monitoring," explained
Todd Rader, Solutions Architect at AppDynamics, in this SYS-CON.tv interview
at DevOpsSummit, held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in
Santa Clara, CA.

Companies that were not previously in the technology space now find
themselves competing with Google and Amazon on the speed of innovation. As
the innovation cycle accelerates, companies must embrace rapid and constant

Ten Myths of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage
technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has
come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions
about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt
this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo
Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing
at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud
computing that still exist today.
Cloud Computing Journal: Why do you think organizations often misunderstand
cloud computing?
Rex Wang: Overall, the understanding of cloud computing has come a long way
over the past few years. Cloud technology is being embraced by a growing
number of organizations each year, while other... (more)
