The Wall Street Journal thinks that this might be the week Yahoo finally
names its long overdue replacement for CEO Jerry Yang and the latest name to
surface as a possible is that of Autodesk executive chairman and former CEO
Carol Bartz, a veteran of Sun and DEC and, like Steve Jobs, a cancer
survivor.
Her name was first bruited last week by AllThingsDigital, the Dow Jones blog
that owns the Yahoo story, and repeated again by the Journal.
Bartz, 60, knows how to grow a software company - when she took over Autodesk
in 1992 it was a $250 million company and left it two years ago a $1.25
billion company - but she has little experience of either advertising or the
web.
It is also unclear whether she wants the job. Yahoo, like Novell before Eric
Schmidt, has a long list of people like ex-Vodefone CEO Arun Sarin who've
said no and may have to fall back on an internal cand... (more)
In a recent Amazon S3 blog, it is reported that Amazon S3 has reached 905
billion objects. As usual, we will plot the new number together with its
historical numbers and see the trend line.
Worked out the math, it takes Amazon S3 247 days to double. So it doubles
every 8 months.
We have been following it for a while and it is almost like a broken record
now. Congratulations to the growth of S3 and the validation of cloud storage
market.
This article will now discuss more about its Compatibles.
As a recent development, Amazon and Eucalyptus teamed up to allow Eucalyptus
to use its “API” and Eucalyptus has been compatible with AWS for quite a
long time.
There are many other S3 compatibles implementations out there in the market.
To name a few, Google Cloud Storage started with S3 compatible before moving
into version 2 of the API; Scality and Mezeo provide S3 compat... (more)

[Note that this is cross posted at the new Digital Scholarship at Harvard
blog.]
Ralph Schroeder and Eric Meyer of the Oxford Internet Institute are giving a
talk sponsored by the Harvard Library on Internet, Science, and
Transformations of knowledge.
NOTE: Live-blogging. Getting things wrong. Missing points. Omitting key
information. Introducing artificial choppiness. Over-emphasizing small
matters. Paraphrasing badly. Not running a spellpchecker. Mangling other
people’s ideas and words. You are warned, people.
Ralph begins by defining e-research as “Research using digital tools and
digital data for the distributed and collaborative production of
knowledge.” He points to knowledge as the contentious term. “But we’re
going to take a crack at why computational methods are such an important part
of knowledge.” They’re going to start with theory and then move to case... (more)

CloudEXPO Stories By Zakia Bouachraoui The precious oil is extracted from the seeds of prickly pear cactus plant. After taking out the seeds from the fruits, they are adequately dried and then cold pressed to obtain the oil. Indeed, the prickly seed oil is quite expensive. Well, that is understandable when you consider the fact that the seeds are really tiny and each seed contain only about 5% of oil in it at most, plus the seeds are usually handpicked from the fruits. This means it will take tons of these seeds to produce just one bottle of the oil for commercial purpose. But from its medical properties to its culinary importance, skin lightening, moisturizing, and protection abilities, down to its extraordinary hair care properties, prickly seed oil has got lots of excellent rewards for anyone who pays the price.
