Running Fedora Core 5 Under Windows XP - Tips and Tricks

For one thing XP is extremely widespread and your clients and/or users probably have it installed on theirs PCs. In fact, most PCs come with XP pre-installed. And makers of peripheral devices and high-speed Internet providers adapt their products and services to work with XP. In most cases it's enough to simply plug a peripheral into an XP computer or to subscribe to a high-speed Internet service to start use it immediately. For many IT professionals it makes sense to work with both Windows XP and Linux. On the other hand, Linux is stable and the Linux community provides you with free high-quality Open Source software. A number of companies also offer non-commercial versions of their products for free that you can try before buying to make sure it's exactly what you need. An example of one such product will be given later in this article. Virtualization Versus Mult... (more)

Application Performance Management Done Right

What is Application Performance Management (APM)? Like a lot of good questions, it depends on your business needs.  What is the goal of an ideal APM?  Does it mean 99.999% availability?  Perhaps it is a favorable overall end user experience when using the application but, as compared to what? My point is that Application Performance Management / Monitoring means different things to different businesses and it can even depend on the application involved. What is the Goal of APM “Begin with the goal in mind.” I wish I could take credit for that quote.  What is the goal of the APM? Have you listed out the objectives you hope to obtain from your APM strategy?  This approach will help your team ensure satisfaction with the final solution chosen.  Here are some examples. Minimum of 99.999% availability with lower Mean Time To Know (MTTK) and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) Less ... (more)

Design the LSB logo

Thanks to the generosity of Caldera Systems and its sponsorship of my role as a Linux Evangelist, I spend some time working for the benefit of Linux Standard Base (please see Resources for more information). One of my latest projects is to produce an LSB logo. Unfortunately, my artistic talent is limited to drawing stick figures or perhaps molding mashed potatoes into the form of a butte. That means we're stuck, and we need your help. We need an LSB compliance logo in anticipation of the release of the first LSB specification and test suite. So who better to turn to for an open source project than the Linux community? Hence, as a participant of the LSB, and with limitless gratitude to the wonderful folks at LinuxWorld.com for publishing and promoting this contest, I'm honored to announce the official public LSB Logo contest. A team of judges (yet to be named) will sel... (more)

The PowerPC Penguin, Part 1

The PowerPC penguin: Read the whole series! Part 1: A Linux-on-Mac overview Part 2: How to install Linux on Mac lthough Linux was born on PC machines, it is widely used on different hardware platforms. And one of those platforms is the Macintosh. Apple's hardware is usually considered more reliable and technically advanced than that of PC machines. But Macs are also more expensive and suffer from a lack of applications. And Apple's prospects as a company could worry some, considering that it was near bankruptcy before Steve Jobs brought it back to life after his comeback in 1998. Apple's financial perturbations have also made Mac OS technically backward compared not only with Linux but even with the Windows OS family. In this two-part series of articles, I want to show you why Linux can be a vital alternative to Mac OS and Mac OS X. You will see how Mac OS loses to ... (more)

SCO vs IBM: "There's Been No Infringement - Dismiss the Suit," Urges IBM

As a result of SCO's infringement, IBM has been damaged and is entitled to an award of actual and/or statutory damages pursuant to 17 U.S.C. § 504 in an amount to be proven at trial. Because SCO's infringement has been willful, deliberate and in utter disregard and derogation of IBM's rights, IBM is entitled to enhanced statutory damages pursuant to 17 U.S.C. § 504. IBM is entitled to costs and attorney's fees pursuant to 17 U.S.C. § 505. This is just one of hundreds of clauses in a document titled IBM'S SECOND AMENDED COUNTERCLAIMS AGAINST SCO which IBM filed last Friday with the US District Court for the State of Utah. Bottom line: IBM doesn't think SCO has a leg to stand on. Not so much as a toe. Accordingly, it wants the Honorable Dale A. Kimball to issue a "declaratory judgement" in its favor - i.e., a judgement that could be issued as soon as the discovery pro... (more)

Perens Joins NY-Based Provider of Insurance-Like Protection for Linux Users

The belief of Daniel Egger, founder of OSRM - provider of "code-scanning and copyright infringement detection technologies, risk assessment, risk mitigation consulting, best practices training and certification, vendor-neutral indemnification and custom insurance to the Global 1000" - is that, by fostering a collaborative, community-based model for identifying and mitigating relevant litigation risks, OSRM will be able to offer its comprehensive insurance at the lowest possible cost. Bruce Perens evidently agrees. "Collective legal defense is the next necessary step for open source to be ready for business," he said in a statement on Friday. "Through a concentration of legal resources and expertise," Perens added, "Open Source Risk Management will be a formidable power against the legal opponents to Open Source." When Pamela Jones joined the company in February, she ... (more)

CloudEXPO Stories
The precious oil is extracted from the seeds of prickly pear cactus plant. After taking out the seeds from the fruits, they are adequately dried and then cold pressed to obtain the oil. Indeed, the prickly seed oil is quite expensive. Well, that is understandable when you consider the fact that the seeds are really tiny and each seed contain only about 5% of oil in it at most, plus the seeds are usually handpicked from the fruits. This means it will take tons of these seeds to produce just one bottle of the oil for commercial purpose. But from its medical properties to its culinary importance, skin lightening, moisturizing, and protection abilities, down to its extraordinary hair care properties, prickly seed oil has got lots of excellent rewards for anyone who pays the price.
