For better or worse, DevOps has gone mainstream. All doubt was removed when
IBM and HP threw up their respective DevOps microsites.
Where are we on the hype cycle? It's hard to say for sure but there's a
feeling we're heading for the "Peak of Inflated Expectations."
What does this mean for the enterprise? Should they avoid DevOps? Definitely
not. Should they be cautious though? Absolutely.
The truth is that DevOps and the enterprise are at best strange bedfellows.
The movement has its roots in the tech community's elite.
Open source projects and methodologies driven by the alumni of companies like
Netflix, Google and Amazon. This is a great thing for the evolution of

The Cloud just got another potential injection of PR from Apple as well with
their announcement of MobileMe. Apple has brought a new technology term, the
'Cloud' - previously reserved for developers, IT managers and the like - to
the main-stream public. We all know that the term 'Cloud Computing' is
relatively new to the Technology buzz. But just how new is it?
I spent some time analyzing search trends of different computing keywords to
try to put everything in perspective. Google trends is a nice too that gives
insight into broad search patterns.

Few areas of human endeavor can match the pace of change in IT. Even by IT
standards, the change being driven by cloud computing sometimes seems
surprising. To refer to a virtual environment that has only recently been
deployed as "legacy," as some organizations are now doing, underscores the
fact that the only thing constant in the data center is change. To deal with
change of this magnitude, which can involve transforming the workload hosting
model of an entire organization, some industrial-strength thinking is
required.
In order to tackle this challenge, it's important to properly frame the cloud
transformation problem. Many associate cloud with agility, flexibility, cost
transparency and other end-user-oriented benefits. But many of these
attributes are primarily associated with new infrastructure requests, and

Virtualization market leader VMware, which is fighting a two-front war
against the recession and Microsoft, made 36 cents a share on revenues up 25%
to $515 million in the fourth quarter, better than Wall Street thought it
would. Estimates only had it pulling down 26 cents (non-GAPP) on revenues of
$510 million.
However the company pulled in its horns in projecting its likely results this
quarter and said that it thought it would only do about $475 million.
Analysts were looking for promises of $495 million.
VMware has never been down sequentially before.
And you can forget any guidance for the year. “The uncertainty in global
economic conditions” is such, it said, that it’s “particularly
difficult to predict product demand.”
CEO Paul Maritz (pictured below) said the company was being
“conservative.”

Here's my premise: high impact, culture-bending technological innovations -
however different they may be one from another - conform to a predictable
template of evolution. It goes something like this:
1. Break-thru - The point of entry at which a technology breaks
onto the market scene doing something old in a dramatically new way. The
break-thru vendor, frequently a modest sized venture or start-up, faces the
uphill struggle to educate, and otherwise evangelize its would-be market.
It is an expensive, labor-intensive phase in which there the potential
rewards are as high as the risk of failure. Early adopters assume the risk
of pioneering to gain substantial advantages in costs and/or performance.

Seven years of research with 15,000 data points, as shown below, provides
overwhelming evidence that there is a noticeable increase in efficiency with
a significant reduction of TCO by moving IT from Basic intothe Rationalized
stage in the IO (Infrastructure Optimization) model. And cloud, or more
specifically private cloud computing, offers a roadmap to facilitate
enterprise IT transforming from Basic or Standardized into Rationalized. A
transition from a traditional infrastructure-focused deployment model into a
cloud-ready, cloud-enabled, and service-centric delivery vehicle in
enterprise IT is imminent, if not already happening.

I have been asked to moderate a cloud computing discussion at Green Gov 2012.
The title of the session is “Cloud Computing: The Next Generation of
Computing and Sustainable IT”. It is a great honor to be selected to
participate as moderator. I believe this is my second go around. As National
Director of Cloud Services with Core BTS, Inc. it is my job to articulate the
value of cloud computing. I have been pondering the title a bit and for me to
actually discuss the next generation of Cloud, we have to identify the
current situation. The cloud has gone way beyond Google Mail and SalesForce
(CRM), into other areas like Cloud Security, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Back
Up. Furthermore, we actually must define our idea of cloud computing and

Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced the OpenSPARC project to open source its new
breakthrough UltraSPARC(R) T1 processor design point. Sun also announced
plans to publish specifications for the UltraSPARC-based chip, including the
source of the design expressed in Verilog, a verification suite and
simulation models, instruction set architecture specification (UltraSPARC
Architecture 2005) and a Solaris OS port. The goal is to enable community
members to build on proven technology at a markedly lower cost and to
innovate freely. The source code will be released under an Open Source
Initiative (OSI)-approved open source license.
With this ground breaking move to open source the UltraSPARC T1 code, Sun
hopes to spur innovation for massively-threaded systems and
“system-on-a-chip” design through increased participation in
