The transition to microservices-based application development is well
underway. About nine out of 10 surveyed organizations are using or have plans
to use microservices, and a like number expect to expand their use in the
year ahead.1

Likewise, the scope and reach of cloud computing continue to expand beyond
its early use for cost-saving, lift-and-shift migration of workloads and
services from data centers to the cloud. Since the early days of cloud
computing, running workloads on public clouds has become common practice,
with an estimated 92 percent of organizations now doing so.2
With such high adoption normalizing the cost benefits, simply being in the
cloud may no longer be enough to remain competitive. Worse yet, market forces

IBM claims to have created new species of custom-built, industry-standard,
Linux-based rack server for Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing companies with
massive data centers and tens of thousands of servers, like online gaming,
social networks, search and Internet firms.
A relatively limited marketplace of maybe a thousand companies with fat
wallets capable of shelling out tens of millions for such system.
IBM means to replace the white boxes they use now or build themselves like
Google does.
It says it’s got a few hundred early adopters and potential customers
in China, Germany, Japan, the UK and America, including Yahoo and Texas Tech,
which is thinking of using it for a HPC center.
WinterGreen Research puts the market at $10 billion.
IBM calls the thing iDataPlex and leverages its blade server widgetry to

Following Unisys’ recent announcement regarding their cloud computing
strategy (Unisys Moves to Break Through Barriers to Adoption of Cloud
Computing) I had the opportunity to speak with Rich Marcello, president of
Unisys Systems & Technology, and Sam Gross, VP of Unisys Global IT
Outsourcing Solutions. What struck me was the coherence and clarity of their
cloud computing vision as compared to HP or IBM.
Unisys’ strategy bridges public, private and hybrid cloud models, and
includes well-differentiated infrastructure, platform and software as a
service offerings (IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS). Further, they wrap this all in a
set of comprehensive service offerings that they can deliver globally. It’s
a big vision, and if they can pull it off it should make them one of the more
interesting providers out there. One of their key differentiators is Unisys
Stealth (described bel... (more)
“Unisys cloud computing strategy is based on providing industrial-strength
security and data protection,” said Rich Marcello, president, Unisys
Technology, Consulting and Integration Solutions, as Unisys today unveiled at
the 4th International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, CA,
what it described as "the latest in a series of aggressive moves to expand
the full spectrum of secure cloud computing options available to enterprise
CIOs."
“Like our public cloud offering," said Marcello - referring to Unisys
Secure Cloud Solution, already launched earlier this year - "Unisys Secure
Private Cloud Solution goes a long way toward allaying the security concerns
of enterprises and their customers."
Marcello announced the Unisys Secure Private Cloud during his Opening Keynote
address at SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Expo being held this week in Silicon
Valley, at... (more)
Virtualization and cloud computing are promising to change the way in which
IT services are delivered and, in effect, transform computing as we know it
today. I think the promises are likely to come true, if and only if
critical technology issues are addressed.
Nicholas Carr told a recent audience at IDC Directions that "Cloud computing
has become the center of investment and innovation." While he is not a
technologist, his sometimes shocking insight into the transformation of IT
have been prescient, even if he doesn't sweat the details of how complex IT
infrastructures can morph into the equivalent of today's public utilities.
To his credit Carr has predicted the rise of the cloud computing press
release, multiple cloud conferences and panels and even the SaaS
repositioning exercise. He also foresaw the rise in Amazon and Google cloud
announcements, perhaps year... (more)
In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

Boy, did I have a blast the last couple of days!
Earlier this week, our CTO, Anders Wallgren, and I were thrilled to attend
the 2-dayMobile Delivery Days conference (#mobileDD) in San Francisco. Last
night, we had the privilege of helping the organizers wrap up the show with a
special episode of #c9d9 - live from the event (video below).
DevOps for Mobile: The Community Is Here to Help
Delivery and operations of mobile applications is still in its early stages -
the tool set is brittle, and best practices and patterns for the different
stages along your pipeline are still emerging.
If you're looking to enhance your skills-set and learn from the community how
to streamline your delivery practices for mobile apps - I strongly encourage
you to look out for the presentations and talks from #mobileDD - which
according to the organizers will be made available online soon. T... (more)
Deployment Methodology
1. Problem Statement
We are given a desktop platform with Java 8 or Java 9 installed and seek to
find a way to deploy high-performance Java applications that use Java 3D
and/or Jogl without having to run an installer. We are subject to the
constraint that the applications be signed and deployed so that they can be
run in a trusted environment (i.e., outside of the sandbox). Further, we seek
to do this in a way that does not depend on bundling a JRE with our
applications, as this makes downloads and installations rather long.
The novel javapackager command (included in the JDK versions 8 and 9),
produces the program installation packages in the range of sizes from 57 to
202 Megabytes approximately.
2. Motivation
We have a long history of making use of Java 3D applications in the software
engineering community. Since the introduction of Java 3D i... (more)
Andy Mulholland's CTO Blog
I have followed with interest a number of comments about the reliability of
Cloud Computing, based on the actual, or perceived, problems with service
from Google and Amazon. Of course there are some real incidents that have
caused "out-rage" (my definition of the rage one experiences from a system
‘outage’), but are failures in ‘best endeavors’ mail services such as
Gmail really the basis for considering the risks and rewards for Cloud
Computing?
Maybe or maybe not, but more serious was the outage of Amazon S3 storage
service Sunday July 20th. This was the second outage from a respected leader
who is selling cloud capacity as a service.
Amazon is well respected for its technology capabilities so this was a shock
especially as a month or so before they had apparently been blaming problems
on their ‘complicated systems’, but then for Google t... (more)
CloudEXPO Stories By Zakia Bouachraoui The precious oil is extracted from the seeds of prickly pear cactus plant. After taking out the seeds from the fruits, they are adequately dried and then cold pressed to obtain the oil. Indeed, the prickly seed oil is quite expensive. Well, that is understandable when you consider the fact that the seeds are really tiny and each seed contain only about 5% of oil in it at most, plus the seeds are usually handpicked from the fruits. This means it will take tons of these seeds to produce just one bottle of the oil for commercial purpose. But from its medical properties to its culinary importance, skin lightening, moisturizing, and protection abilities, down to its extraordinary hair care properties, prickly seed oil has got lots of excellent rewards for anyone who pays the price.
