On the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 12,000 for the first
time since June 2008, it was impossible not to correlate the eloquence and
optimism of President Obama's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday night
with the restoration of a sense of perspective and hope in the USA about the
future.
Obama grasped the nettle full-on. "We are poised for progress," he declared,
adding:
"Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock
market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is
growing."
As one blogger expressed it, though - and he is a former Goldman Sachs trader
called Tyler Durden, so he ought to know wheref he speaks:
"There was a massive pink elephant in the room called reality though."
Durden's gripe is with what he deems to be the unreality of Obama's praising
Google and Facebook so highly in an Ameri... (more)
(LinuxWorld) — Linux gets a lot of press these days, but much of it
appears condescending and is more about the phenomenon of its emergence and
growth than it is about the value and use of the technology. That may be
about to change, and for the better.
As a group, the so-called "mainstream press" often appears to favor Microsoft
and show an appalling lack of technical depth in its enthusiastic repetition
of the latest Microsoft press release. There’s been a lot of
speculation on why this is and whether it even happens. So far, no definitive
research provides answers one way or the other.
I think there are two explanations. First, the press is largely the victim of
a Microsoft marketing strategy that plays off of the social rules people
learn in high school: Money and social skills define the in-crowd, and only
nerds kvetch about the importance of better ... (more)
MuleSoft, the web middleware concern, has released Tcat Server 6 R1, an
enterprise-class web application server based on Apache Tomcat that now
includes cloud deployment capabilities enabled in one click by a plug-in for
Amazon EC2.
Administrators can manage their server instances both in the cloud as well as
behind the firewall from the Tcat Server console.
Tcat Server is a fully supported version of Tomcat, based on the Apache
Tomcat binary, with zero changes to the core code.
It's supposed to give Tomcat users critical enterprise-class functionality,
including server group management, application provisioning and
Tomcat-specific performance diagnostics, as well as let IT teams migrate from
heavyweight legacy platforms such as Oracle WebLogic or IBM WebSphere to the
lightweight Tomcat open source option.
Features include an application provisioning roll-back featu... (more)
Early Bird Savings at Cloud Expo
This week, Amazon took a step with EC2 that many had long anticipated: They
announced spot pricing for cloud compute instances. EC2 customers can now
name their own price, and Amazon will bring compute instances up at variable
discount prices according to these "bids". This complements their March 2009
move at the other end of the spectrum, extra-cost reserved instances. This
evolution of the cloud compute market was predicted by many, but Amazon
deserves credit for making it happen.
The obvious next question is whether spot pricing can work for cloud storage.
Although there are cases where spot pricing might make sense, the nature of
data storage trends against this sort of pricing model. Let's explore the
question further.
Cloud Compute
Cloud compute is obviously different from cloud storage: The former deals

There's been a resurgent role for service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a
practical and relevant ingredient for effective design and use of cloud,
mobile, and big-data technologies.
To find out why, BriefingsDirect recently gathered an international panel of
experts to explore the concept of "architecture is destiny," especially when
it comes to hybrid services delivery and management. The panel shows how SOA
is proving instrumental in allowing the needed advancements over highly
distributed services and data, when it comes to scale, heterogeneity support,
and governance.
The panel consists of Chris Harding, Director of Interoperability at The Open
