PaaS Booming
After an initial sluggish start, where Microsoft Windows Azure was the only
player, we started to see increased support for Platform as a Service from
major vendors starting with VMware vFabric and Red Hat OpenShift.
However, there was still a void in the PaaS space as the major players IBM
and Oracle initially did not announce any PaaS offering. Now the recent
announcements from both Oracle and IBM have shown complete support for PaaS
as the way to go for future enterprise application development. This is great
news for enterprises to move forward. Let's analyze the developer-friendly
features of both the IBM and Oracle PaaS offerings.

The value of blogging continues to surface as a naval-gazing exercise within
the technology community. Does blogging matter? Does anyone care whether or
not it matters? Should it matter? These and other meta-questions continue to
be posed by those who a.) aren't getting enough hits on their blogs, b.) have
too much time on their hands, or c.) are onto one of the seminal
transformations in history of humans' communications with one another.
My view has always been that blogging serves two major purposes: it acts as
an arbitraging agent within the calcified traditional media world, and it
keeps a lot of people off the streets and at their keyboards where they
belong.
The first, and obviously more serious, point relates to the self-correcting
mechanism that blogging has become, whether in debunking the George W. Bush
"sugarcoating memo" story, finding flaws in the late... (more)
IBM has unveiled security hardware, software and services to help meet the
security needs of the user, enterprise systems and the core of large-scale
Internet Protocol (IP) carrier networks.
The Telecom Core Infrastructure Security Solution monitors and manages not
only the health of network but the traffic itself, through a single,
integrated system.
As the telecom industry re-directs efforts toward launching and delivering
IP-based services -- telephone services over the Internet, Internet TV, push
to talk and instant messaging -- they have become particularly vulnerable to
a new breed of attack, designed to cripple the key components and networks
that deliver these new services.
Through this solution, carriers can offer enterprises higher levels of
security and reliability. "We believe security represents a tremendous
revenue opportunity for carriers and we are wel... (more)
Goldman Sachs expects Cisco's advance into servers to have no impact on HP or
IBM in the intermediate term. The broker reckons Cisco's ramp will be slow
and user trials of its high-end systems long. It also figures that the fact
that its server seems to be compatible only with its own switches will
"dampen the rate of adoption." Goldman expects the relationship between Cisco
and VMware/EMC to continue to deepen as their cloud technologies develop.
Brocade, it says, should benefit from Cisco's move. It figures server OEMs
will "move away from Cisco and closer to Brocade for storage, and possibly,
Ethernet switching."

The shift to cloud computing is underway, and to some degree I can understand
the concerns of organizations with tens of thousands, if not hundreds of
thousands of employees, though they too can benefit from this shift to cloud
computing through an on premise approach.
What interests me are the reasons why companies with less than 1,000
employees are not aggressively investigating or pursuing cloud computing.
Given their size, flexibility, entrepreneurial spirit, and their agility,
they stand to benefit long before larger organizations.
If you’re a small to medium size business owner, what are your main
concerns shifting to cloud computing? Is it a lack of understanding of its
benefits or other concerns?
From a benefits perspective, I would surmise that the ones below would be an
attractive starting point for SMB / SME companies.
Pay for what you use. No need to ... (more)

Admittedly, when I was heads-down in code earlier in my career, I did not pay
much attention to reference architectures. We had our own internal
architectures that served as ‘the way and the truth', and reference
architectures for our product or solution domain were simply out of scope.
Anyway, reference architectures are, by design, not detailed enough to
steer someone implementing one out of hundreds of components that will fall
under said architectures. So, for the most part I ignored them, even though I
could hear rumblings coming from rooms full of folks arguing over revision 25
of the reference architecture for some problem domain or another.
Fast forward a few years to a change of professional venue, and my outlook on
reference architectures is a good deal different. If I were still developing,
I'm sure my outlook would be much the same. However, talking with... (more)

Reblogged from Tech:
A Boy and His Atom is less than 90 seconds long. It doesn't have much of a
plot, or any big laughs. And the animation is rudimentary — it's
monochromatic, blocky and generally reminiscent of the graphics I programmed
on my Radio Shack TRS-80 computer in 1978, only not quite as fancy.
And yet IBM’s new cartoon — yes, IBM made a cartoon — is remarkable.
