The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.

Flux7 is a consulting group with a focus on helping organizations build,
maintain and optimize DevOps processes. The group has a wide view across
DevOps challenges and benefits, including:
The distinct challenge of a skills shortage in this area and how
organizations are coping to meet demands with limited resources. The
technical requirements: From stacks to scripts, and what works. The practical
and political challenges: Beyond the stacks and the human element... (more)
DevOps: Unify Your Tests - Or Fail
While testing is often ignored when it comes to DevOps - it could be the most
important aspect of achieving true DevOps success. Without rethinking
automated testing from the ground-up, the entire DevOps productivity gain
cannot be realized.
Large tech companies build their own rapid test automation that runs in
minutes across functional, performance, security and other tests.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Kevin Surace, CEO of Appvance, will discuss
how we learn from these real-world successes and achieve a 95% time reduction
in creating and running automated unified tests. Otherwise enterprises must
make a tradeoff between velocity and quality. Learning from the leaders, that
tradeoff does not need to be made.

My personal view is NO.
It needs DevOps for sure, but not DevOps managers.
There is a simple explanation and a more well defined, elaborate explanation
to this question though.
The simple explanation first. A Manager's role needs to be associated with
some outcome. A Project Manager - is responsible for the outcome of
successful project, a Business Manager - is responsible for the outcome of a
growing and profitable business, a Service Manager - is responsible for
delivering improved service, etc. Devops is not an outcome. It's a means to
an end - that end being continuous delivery.
Does this mean I am okay with a Continuous Delivery Manager instead of a
DevOps Manager? Technically yes. If continuous delivery is the only desired
outcome. Typically it is not. The desired outcome is the predictable and 'on
demand' delivery of new functionalities from applications and ... (more)
DevOps is going to go where no IT has gone before! Big Data is here, but big
insights are lagging behind. Emboldened by enterprise adoption of BYOD, many
employees are starting to reach toward the cloud. And as billions more
devices get connected to the internet, there will be a huge infrastructure
transformation on the backend.

Puppet Labs on Wednesday released the Puppet Labs 2014 State of DevOps
Report. This year's third annual DevOps report is based on the largest and
most comprehensive survey to date, with more than 9,200 IT and software
development professionals responding from companies of all types and sizes,
from around the world.
This year's findings revealed that companies with high-performing IT
organizations are twice as likely to exceed their profitability, market share
and productivity goals. The analysis also revealed that for the second
consecutive year, DevOps practices are being adopted at accelerated rates and
high-performing IT organizations deploy code 30 times more frequently with 50
percent fewer failures.
To produce the survey and report, Puppet Labs partnered with Gene Kim, author
of The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business
Win; Je... (more)

Two and a half years ago, when he stepped in to help Oracle get back into the
application server business, Thomas Kurian had quite a tough row to hoe. Now
he has 19,000 customers. JDJ explores with Kurian his 30-month journey, and
asks too about other aspects of emerging technology seen from the Oracle
perspective.
In JDJ last month, Sun's Jonathan Schwartz claimed the "death" of middleware,
so my first question to Thomas Kurian is inevitable, given his role as a
champion of middleware for Oracle. What does he make of Schwartz's claim?
"Those who say such things are being facetious," replies Kurian, bluntly. "A
company that says that there is no role for middleware means it in the sense
that it feels its own operating systems incorporate middleware facilities.
Such a company is bundling proprietary middleware into the OS as a vehicle to
try and lock c... (more)
DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix
Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real pu... (more)
DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us.
The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days.
We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually
standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people!
My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with
RingCentral on Devops for BigData.
I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why
DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant
colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.
The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile
Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and
tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery
pipeline, from code changes to production updates.
Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)
