Three Hot Cloud Security Topics from @CloudExpo Silicon Valley
Two weeks ago (November 3-5), I attended the Cloud Expo Silicon Valley as a
speaker, where I presented on the security and privacy due diligence
requirements for cloud solutions.
Cloud security is a topical issue for every CIO, CISO, and technology buyer.
Decision-makers are always looking for insights on how to mitigate the
security risks of implementing and using cloud solutions. Based on the
presentation topics covered at the conference, as well as the general
discussions heard between sessions, I wanted to share some of my observations
on emerging trends. As cyber security serves as a foundation and necessary
defense for customer and cloud solutions, cyber becomes more and more
commoditized. The real impact is how do we deliver a confidence or trust to
customers and their customer journey with our o... (more)
"Space Monkey by Vivent Smart Home is a product that is a distributed
cloud-based edge storage network. Vivent Smart Home, our parent company, is a
smart home provider that places a lot of hard drives across homes in North
America," explained JT Olds, Director of Engineering, and Brandon
Crowfeather, Product Manager, at Vivint Smart Home, in this SYS-CON.tv
interview at @ThingsExpo, held Oct 31 - Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara
Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is
a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the
DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being
data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation
if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500
companies from a gene... (more)

Our team had the pleasure of attending CloudEXPO this year, a conference
focused on cloud technology, security, and trends. Our CEO, Emil Sayegh,
presented a breakaway session titled Economics of the Cloud: Don't Aim for
the Sky on Everything. During this session, Emil covered the current cost
challenges related to public cloud and how a hybrid approach enables
organizations to decrease their IT spend and increase business agility.
Emil wasn't alone in offering up helpful insights-there were several
outstanding presentations given throughout the conference. Here, we've
highlighted some of our key takeaways from these exceptional discussions.
Takeaway #1: Focus on Economics
During his session (view the slides here), Emil stressed the importance of
building a careful strategy before rushing into the cloud to avoid
overspending. With or... (more)
"Big data represents a sea change of capabilities in IT" notes Matt McLarty,
Vice President, Client Solutions at Layer 7 Technologies, in this exclusive
Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. McLarty continued: "In
conjunction with mobile and cloud, I think Big Data will provide a
technological makeover to the typical enterprise infrastructure, drawing a
hard API border in front of core business services while blurring the line
between logic and data services."
Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? - "While the IT savings aspect is
compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances
business agility."
Matt McLarty: Agree. We have a number of customers who are able to use Layer
7 Gateways to protect their cloud deployments, and leverage the elastic
scaling model of the cloud to handle seasonal or sporadic bursts of traffic

The catchphrase "Internet of Things" may seem like a relatively new term, but
in reality has been around since the late ‘90s, when there was a desire to
more efficiently track the flow of goods for supply chain purposes. The
enabling technology was RFID which made it possible to report on stock levels
and inventory in real-time.
These days, the term "Internet of Things" has a much broader meaning than
just supply chain technology. In the many years that have passed, big data
and mobile technology have grown by leaps and bounds. This means that it is
possible to crunch large amounts of sensor data and deliver context-relevant
information to users on their smartphones. As a consequence, just about any
physical object out there can be measured as long as there are sensors that
can transmit this information. This has huge implications for global economic
growth, and co... (more)
Moderro Technologies www.moderro.com will debut its Xpack Internet Computer
– an integrated (hardware, operating system and web management) solution
for the Web 2.0 desktop SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Conference & Expo, November
19-21, in San Jose, CA.
The Xpack features a clean and friendly user interface and operating system
that was written by Moderro specifically for interacting with Web 2.0
applications. This functionality, combined with simplicity, security, a small
footprint, energy efficiency, and backward compatibility make the Moderro
Xpack a perfect choice for Web 2.0 office.
“Web applications are an afterthought with operating systems confining them
to a single-window browser, virtually pushing them into the background,”
said Dan Itkis Moderro Vice President. “We decided to develop our own
operating system, which makes web applications easier to use while ... (more)

A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing.
Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active
players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we
identified back in January of this year, to half as many again - testimony,
if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the
"Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites cited. As ever we encourage software engineers, developers, IT
operations managers, and new/growing companies in every case to "suck it and
see" by downloading or otherwise sampling the offering in question for
themselves.

users want different capabilities they simply cannot provide,"... (more)
Much discussion in the cloud computing world has focused on a simple
question: Is a private cloud infrastructure worthy of the name? It's been
posed in many ways, with some going so far as claiming that there is no such
thing as a private cloud. Although discussions like these are all too common
in many areas, the question really amounts to little more than counting
angels dancing on pin heads. The key issue is whether private cloud-style
infrastructure can deliver real benefits like public clouds can.
First, let's set out some definitions:
The draft NIST definition, perhaps the best we have at this point, states
that "Cloud computing is a pay-per-use model for enabling available,
convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable
computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications,
services) that can be rapidly provisioned and rel... (more)
