In 1977, the Eagles released "Hotel California", a song about drugs and the
effects an addiction has on people. Putting "We are all just prisoners here,
of our own device" in the context of our digital lifestyle today we find a
lot of truth. There is a reason why Google provides most of its services for
free or why Amazon wants us to have an Echo in every home or why Facebook has
become our directory of "friends." What looks pretty convenient is a threat.
It is a threat to the end consumers but also a threat to the established
economy. And even if we have the choice to check out any time - we will never
leave.
The Feast of the Beasts
After already two decades, the Internet giants - speaking of Amazon, Google,
Facebook, Alibaba and Baidu - are still collecting tons of data, filling
their databases with information of everyone's knowledge, opinions,

(October 7, 2005) - AJAX isn't a technology, or a language, and there's no
recipe to implement it; it's just a combination of various components to
achieve something you otherwise couldn't: asynchronous http requests.
However, since early 2005, when Google and Flickr popularized the concept,
its use has grown rapidly.
The name AJAX is short for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It uses the
JavaScript XMLHttpRequest function to create a tunnel from the client's
browser to the server and transmit information back and forth without having
to refresh the page. The data travels in XML format because it transmits
complex data types over clear text.
AJAX uses XHTML for the data presentation of the view layer, DOM, short for
Document Object Model, which dynamically manipulates the presentation, XML
for data exchange, and XMLHttpRequest as the exchange engine that ties

Over the next couple of years the world of Internet as we know it will change
dramatically, providing users with Web applications that go far beyond what
we can create today using RIA platforms such as Dojo and Flash.
Next generation Internet applications will provide you with instant news and
real-time information without the need for plug-ins or 20th century polling
techniques. Imagine using your Web browser to monitor ANY real-time data
source, from server statistics to your favorite stock portfolio, with no
polling, no plug-ins and no pain!
Today we can create highly interactive, plug-in free, Web applications that
mimic many of the features provided by desktop applications, but there is
still one area that has yet to be fully integrated - scalable
server-initiated message delivery - Enterprise Comet.
Comet is an advanced technique to enable real-time messaging from... (more)
As the Internet continues to evolve, new business and technical opportunities
are emerging almost daily. This session will talk in detail about some of
them but focus on the concepts of remixability of all types of content. We
will discuss in detail the OpenAJAX Gadget Specification which provides an
important building block of the mashup ecosytem. We will walk through the
whole ecosystem from content creation to the cataloging of content from many
sources to the mashing up of that content.

Technologies group within IBM. Stew's recent responsibilities include
chairing the OpenAJAX Gadget Taskforce, leading the QEDWiki project within
IBM, defining and shaping IBM's Web 2.0 and Situational Application

In streamlining the user experience of my ATK modules, I have been
considering the integration of external sources. Two of these external
sources have been the JQuery plugins: Flexigrid and jqGrid. Both plugins are
great. They both provide AJAX paging and record searching among other things.
I went to the extent of integrating Flexigrid into the dashboard of my ATK
ERP/CRM module and it brought a completely new experience to the mix.
Recently I have come to find another JQuery grid plugin, which probably
offers more than Flexigrid. Its name is jqGrid.

Here's another pet hate in web bad-practice: Javascript. Javascript is a
client-side scripting language that allows really useful interaction to occur
with the page and the browser, thereby improving the end user experience when
using a site. It's very easy to insert Javascript in a page, not so easy to
do it right.

Digg
After its new owners decided to go back to the drawing board and figure out
what to do with the former Web 2.0 darling, Digg is relaunching on Wednesday.
Today, a week after its new owner Betaworks explained why it bought the site
and announced the August 1 relaunch, the company has published the first
mockups and screenshots of the new Digg v1 and explained what the user
experience on the site will look like. According to this announcement, the
new Digg will be a “beautiful, image-friendly, and ad-free experience.”

Java EE PaaS Growth & Interoperability Concerns
As observed in my earlier articles, the Java EE PaaS portfolio is gaining in
strength each day, with support from major players such as IBM, Oracle,
VMWare, Redhat , Google and Amazon.
However unlike the Microsoft > .NET Framework > Azure PaaS equation where
there is just one version of the framework from one vendor, the openness of
Java EE led to several implementations of application server-specific
implementations.
As Java EE standards define a core set of API, frame works and features as
part of its implementation, an application server is the container that
executes these instructions and provides a development and runtime platform
for Java EE applications.
While application servers are expected to implement the Java EE
specifications & technologies like (SERVLETS, JAVA SERVER FACES, ENTERPRISE
