Brain Change and #DigitalTransformation | @ThingsExpo #IoT #API #AI #DX #SmartCities

The renowned military strategist John Boyd taught that people and institutions collect favorite philosophies, strategies, theories and ideologies over a period of time, and then try to align the future to fit them.  The problem with this is the future is rarely like the past, and trying to fit new data into old paradigms often forces us to perform irrational mental gymnastics, which leaves us farther from the truth. Our resistance to change and unwillingness to question our beliefs in the face of mounting evidence, leads us to analytical and execution failure. A more productive habit would be to continuously review our mental constructs to find out how to modify our interpretations to align with new evidence.  This action, however, goes against our human nature that seeks stability and resists change.  We see the consequences of these challenges weekly as we read a... Google Taking More Shares Public

Google's stock has left many doubters googly-eyed since its initial IPO, sailing past the $100 barrier early on and almost tripling in value since that time. Buoyed by this success and by recent profitable results, the company has announced that it will make more than 14 million new shares publicly available. At current prices, the shares would be worth about $4 billion. The company has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed public offering by the company of 14,159,265 shares of Class A common stock. The managing underwriters of the proposed offering are Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated and Credit Suisse First Boston LLC, acting as joint book-running managers, and Allen & Company LLC, acting as co-manager. The underwriters have an option to purchase up to 600,000 additional shares of Class A common stock from Googl... (more)

Knol is Google's Wikia

Wikia is Jimmy Wales' dream of doing to Google what Wikipedia did to Britannica. Unfortunately for Wales and his investors, Google had a 10-year lead, and a huge ecosystem had been built up around it. Google is a thriving coral reef, and one doesn't just show up one day with an idea and compete with an ecosystem. That's why Wikia didn't, and isn't likely to work. It's amazing how balanced the arrogance is, because the same thing that makes it so hard for Wikia to gain on Google is going to make it virtually impossible for Google to catch Wikipedia with Knol. The thinking is likely just as superficial and greedy as Wales' hypothesis that the approach that could unseat Google is the secret sauce that makes Wikipedia work, as if that had anything to do with Wales. It doesn't, anymore than Google needs Larry and Sergey to keep on rolling as a coral reef ecosystem. See, Wi... (more)

Two Questions for Branding in the Web 2.0 World: Is It Up? Is It Fast?

Keeping your brand alive and well on the Web isn't as easy as it looks. There are few things as important as your reputation, and in the Web 2.0 economy, your reputation is increasingly tied to your web presence. So keeping the website up, available, and responding quickly is critical not only for success, but also for survival. If you think about it, a website's reputation on the Internet can be boiled down to two questions: ‘Is it up?' and ‘Is it fast?' Sure, some websites just make it look easy. Take Google, which is always up and always blazing fast. When was the last time you connected to the Internet, typed in google.com, and nothing came up? While you have the triumph of Google on one side of the coin, you have other sites that are cautionary tales. These days, major site outages make the news. Amazon.com had problems on June 6 of this year, and that outage ... (more)

Andreessen Turns VC

Netscape wunderkind Marc Andreessen, now about to turn a demographically middle-aged 38, has officially turned venture capitalist, a counter-culture move since the dot.com bust trashed the sport. Andreessen and fellow Netscape veteran Ben Horowitz have raised a relatively modest $300 million – which seems to be considered a goodly sum in these dire times – and have set up Andreessen Horowitz as they’ve been publicly threatening to do since February. Andreessen told the Financial Times they could have raised $500 million or $600 million but felt a twosome couldn’t handle that kind of money. They reportedly only intended to raise $250 million. Andreessen and Horowitz have been playing angel investors for about five years now and have spread their personal wealth around some 40-odd start-up including Twitter, Digg, Ning, Rightscale and Linkin, some of them famous nam... Over 50,000 Users Now Using CloudDav to Edit Their Data on iOS

London, United Kingdom, June 15, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Vehera LTD , who trade as SMEStorage, today announced that over 50,000 users are now using their CloudDav feature, which adds WebDav over any storage Cloud, to edit documents on the iPad and iPhone from iWork and other WebDav ready document editing Apps. CEO Ian Osborne said, "Many iOS Apps may not directly support Storage Clouds such DropBox, BaseCamp, Amazon S3, Google Drive, SkyDrive, RackSpace etc, but do provide support for WebDav access. Apple's own iWork App which encompasses Pages, Numbers and Keynote is classic example of this." "This prevents users from directly opening, editing and saving their documents using these tools. What CloudDav does is add a WebDav protocol adaptor to these Clouds so users can directly edit and interact with them using Apps that provide support for WebDav, such as iWork." "Also, If... (more)

That Pretty New Facebook Friend? Probably Taliban

Facebook In the good ol’ days of spy vs. spy, the honeypot was a tried and true method espionage technique, laced with danger, intrigue, and sex. These days—as Australian soldiers have found out the hard way—all it takes to seduce your way to state secrets is a Facebook friend request and a Google image search for “hot chicks.” As Australian news site News.com.au reports, a recent Aussie government look at the unhealthy intermingling of social media and the military, several of its soldiers have fallen victim to the oldest trick in the Facebook; someone pretending to be an attractive, flirtatious girl when in reality they’re not.
