Data Management for the Cloud Era
As data explodes in quantity, importance and from new sources, the need for
managing and protecting data residing across physical, virtual, and cloud
environments grow with it. Managing data includes protecting it, indexing and
classifying it for true, long-term management, compliance and E-Discovery.
Commvault can ensure this with a single pane of glass solution - whether in a
private cloud, a Service Provider delivered public cloud or a hybrid cloud
environment - across the heterogeneous enterprise.

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?
Eric Miraglia of Yahoo!
1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the
iPhone SDK vs using AJAX?
2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to
make it faster?
3. When it comes to accessibility, how do I know what's required of me for
my rich web apps? Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... (more)
Microsoft figures that in five years time half the Exchange mailboxes in the
world – perhaps 160 million mailboxes – will be running on its
servers in its cloud infrastructure on Exchange Online.
At least that’s Microsoft senior vice-president Chris Capossela told
Reuters going into the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit
the other day.
That’s one of the reasons Microsoft has been building massive data
centers like Google – adding a reported 10,000 servers to the
population a month – to host Exchange Online and its friends, Office
SharePoint Online and Office Communications Online. Exchange Online is of
course the SaaS side of Microsoft’s traditional Exchange mail and
messaging software.
Microsoft will be charging a larger monthly fee for Exchange Online than it
would to simply buy the traditional sof... (more)
I’m in Berlin, so I’d have to get up at 3AM to watch the debate tonight,
which I’m unlikely to do since tomorrow is a work day. But, I expect Palin
will do better than expected, although not better than we’re expecting to
expect her to do. And the media will seize on some stumbles by Biden so they
can avoid the appearance of piling on Palin. In fact, we’re already seeing
some gaffe inflation.
A gaffe used to be not just a mistake but one that really hurts a
candidate’s standing. Biden’s thinking that FDR presided over the 1929
crash and that folks had TVs back then is a little bit of dumbness about
history, but not a true gaffe because it doesn’t reveal a reason to give up
your vote for him. McCain talking about the Iraq-Pakistan border is more of
one, but since no one believes McCain is that ill-informed, we instead chalk
it up to a mere momentary slip of the brai... (more)
Citrix on Ulitzer
After closing out the second quarter with flat revenues of $393 million and
earnings of $43 million, or 23 cents a share – 39 cents non-GAAP and so a
penny better than expected – Citrix Systems took the auspices and figures
revenues are gonna be flat again in both Q3 and the full year with little
improvement in its margins.
As a result, Wall Street took its stock down around 2%.
CEO Mark Templeton said the economic is still tough, especially in EMEA, but
claimed “our customers are embracing IT as an on-demand service, confirming
our strategy around desktop virtualization, the next-generation data center
and SaaS.”
Indicative of his point, Q2 revenue, up 3% in the Americas, dropped 12% in
EMEA and 4% in the Pacific.
Broadly speaking the company’s Q2 product license revenue dropped 15%;
revenue from license updates was up 9%; online services revenu... (more)
I had an awesome discussion today with a potential client that is interested
in converting his current paper based inspection process into electronic
format. He was very enthusiastic about the prospect of getting rid of the
mountain of paper in his office. His enthusiasm got me thinking about not
only the benefits of eliminating paper but ALSO the benefits of embedded
business logic. For example: if an inspection failed he could require
that his inspectors collect information about why it failed, capture a
picture of the damage or issue, maybe even record a voice note and associate
it with the inspection.
We were able to identify many different areas of opportunity. Here are just a
few:
Eliminating the costly duplication of effort associated with his current
paper process Providing real time information to management Eliminating
transcription and handwritin... (more)
Several weeks ago I introduced, in an article on this site, the concepts of
PIOs (performance impact objects) and PIVs (performance impact variables) and
their role in managing a mobile workforce. Today, I want to expand upon the
concept of PIOs and introduce two additional concepts, 1) optimized
intersections, and 2) an emerging concept from the intelligence community
called "patterns of life." We will then explore how these can be useful to an
enterprise seeking to maximize efficiencies and the value of their enterprise
mobility solutions.

Let's first review some examples of PIOs.
