Using Docker For a Complex IoT Application
Aater Suleman, CEO & Co-Founder at Flux7, is an industry veteran in
performance optimization on servers and distributed systems. He earned his
PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also currently teaches
computer systems design and architecture. His current interests are in
optimizing DevOps and reducing cloud costs.
In his @ThingsExpo presentation, Aaater Suleman will discuss DevOps, Linux
containers, Docker in developing a complex Internet of Things application.
The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.
Flux7 is a consulting group with a focus ... (more)
Craftsy Case Study: Getting started with the VictorOps Transmogrifier
By Samantha Haltman
When VictorOps launched the Transmogrifier private beta program
last November, Craftsy was eager to see what the feature was capable of. For
this case study, we spoke with David Palma, DevOps Engineer at Craftsy, to
hear what he had to say about his experience…
“Rule creation for this feature was extremely straight forward”
“VictorOps beat us to the punch.”
When we found out about the new Transmogrifier feature, we were actually in
the process of building something similar internally. We realized there was a
serious disconnect between the alerts coming in, and the information
available surrounding the alert. Implementing the Transmogrifier provided
exactly what we were looking for with regards to annotations, and saved us a
lot of time since we didn’t have to build this functio... (more)
(LinuxWorld) — This is the first installment of a series comparing the
implementation results for real business applications. We'll examine
business-application implementation using Unix tools and ideas and how this
plan of attack compares to what happens when the same apps are implemented
using Microsoft-licensed software.
Each application will be the subject of two articles. The first one will
present the theoretical — or "book-learning" — view of the issue
and invite readers with real-world experience in using the technologies to
contact the author in confidence to correct my errors, give your estimate of
the time needed for the work and discuss what goes wrong when you try to go
from theory to practice.
The follow-up article will then try to summarize community experience with
the technologies in order to draw out conclusions everyone can use an... (more)
On the SCO-IBM front, the SCO Group, in pressing its $3 million case against

Richard Stallman, head of the Free Software Foundation, father of the GPL and
industry gadfly;
Stuart Cohen, CEO of the Open Software Development Lab, where Torvalds works
and where major vendors like IBM are stitching together enterprise-class

A John Doe or Does at Novell, which once owned Unix, still claims enough

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?
Eric Miraglia of Yahoo!
1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the
iPhone SDK vs using AJAX?
2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to
make it faster?
3. When it comes to accessibility, how do I know what's required of me for
my rich web apps? Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... (more)

In a recent report, Gartner made some bold predictions around the near-term
future of SaaS. In essence they are endorsing that the SaaS model has
increasing leverage over existing software models as the IT spending
tightens:
Worldwide software-as-a-service revenue in the enterprise application market
is
on pace to surpass 2007 sales by 27% and to more than double by 2012, a
market
research firm said Wednesday. Revenue this year is on track to rise above
$6.4 billion, compared with $5.1 billion last year, Gartner said. In four
years,
revenue is expected to reach $14.8 billion.
(from Antone Gonsalvez at InformationWeek)
While it is always a little dangerous to follow predictions from analysts
when considering your specific market or application, this announcement is an
interesting one given the current economic conditions.
We share this premise at Hummer... (more)
Over the last few months there has been a growing amount of momentum around
cloud interoperability. Lately it seems that a few in the industry have
gotten a little confused on the differences between Cloud Compatibility,
Portability and Interoperability. So I thought it might be time to take a
closer look at the various terms and how they relate as well as how they
differ.
First lets start with Cloud Interoperability. As I've described before, Cloud
Interoperability refers to the ability for multiple cloud platforms to work
together or inter-operate. A key driver of an interoperable cloud computing
ecosystem is to eliminate what I call proprietary "API Propagation" whereby
each new cloud service provides their own unique set of web services and
application programming interfaces. Simply, the goal of Cloud
Interoperability is to make it easier to use multiple cloud p... (more)
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) represents a complete preintegrated platform
offering for the development and operation of general purpose business
applications. A fully preintegrated and standardized platform - offered in a
multi-tenant mode as a managed service - means much less manual effort than
installing and configuring middleware components in on-premise servers.
Enterprise architecture patterns and framework changed heavily during the
last decade, the software / platform / framework upgrades eat up the major
chunk of it budgets and leaving relatively smaller portion for business
innovation.
One of the important goals of PaaS is to relieve the enterprises from the
trouble of upgrades and concentrate on business value to clients.
Due to the above out-of-the-box features for enterprises, PaaS is considered
an enabler for innovation. The... (more)
