A Harsh Big Data Message | @ExpoDX #BigData #IoT #Analytics #SmartCities #DigitalTransformation

This is a short blog with a harsh message for Big Data vendors. Camera fades in to Pastor Schmarzo heading to the pulpit… What does the future hold for today’s Big Data vendors?  Hundreds of startups are rushing into the Big Data market to stake their claim to a market that IDC predicts will reach $187 billion by 2019.  Dang, that’s a big market, especially considering that the Global Business Intelligence market will only reach a trifling $20.8 billion by 2018 or the long-running ERP applications market is expected to reach a trivial $84.1 billion by 2020.  Yes, the big data market opportunity is very exciting indeed! However, there is one little, teeny-weeny challenge for big data vendors trying to realize this financial bounty. The Gartner chart below summarizes this challenge very nicely (see Figure 1). How JSON and Big Data Will Shape the Internet of Things

The catchphrase "Internet of Things" may seem like a relatively new term, but in reality has been around since the late ‘90s, when there was a desire to more efficiently track the flow of goods for supply chain purposes. The enabling technology was RFID which made it possible to report on stock levels and inventory in real-time. These days, the term "Internet of Things" has a much broader meaning than just supply chain technology. In the many years that have passed, big data and mobile technology have grown by leaps and bounds. This means that it is possible to crunch large amounts of sensor data and deliver context-relevant information to users on their smartphones. As a consequence, just about any physical object out there can be measured as long as there are sensors that can transmit this information. This has huge implications for global economic growth, and co... (more)

API Economy By @AkanaInc | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #Microservices #InternetOfThings

"People are a lot more knowledgeable about APIs now. There are two types of people who work with APIs - IT people who want to use APIs for something internal and the product managers who want to do something outside APIs for people to connect to them," explained Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President at SOA Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 15th Cloud Expo, held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Internet of Things, Data and APIs When something as simple as an API can integrate massive amounts of data into, and through, a wide variety of applications, any company can be a digital enterprise. There is a perception that some industries are using technology to innovate, while others languish in antiquated ways of running their business. But in our massively connected age, it's rare to find examples where technology isn't... (more)

Why Are APIs So Popular? | @CloudEXPO @AndyThurai #AI #API #IoT #IIoT #SmartCities #ArtificialIntelligence #DigitalTransformation

Kin Lane recently wrote a couple of blogs about why copyrighting an API is not common. I couldn’t agree more that copyrighting APIs is uncommon. First of all, the API definition is just an interface (It is the implementation detail that is important, and needs to be guarded), so it doesn’t make any sense to copyright an interface. (It is almost like copyrighting a pretty face ). Secondly, the whole idea of exposing an API is you are looking for others to finish the work you started by just providing the plumbing work. Why would anyone want to get involved with a copyrighted API and finish your work for you? Kin Lane says, “API copyright would prevent the reuse and remix of common or successful API patterns within a space. We are at a point where aggregating common, popular APIs into single, standardized interfaces is emerging as the next evolution in web and mobil... (more)

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
