MySQL Journal on Ulitzer
Oracle's ownership of MySQL could run off some open source and MySQL users
according to a poll the 451 Group took among its CAOS user community, CAOS
standing for Commercial Adoption of Open Source. There were 347 respondents,
the researcher says, and from their answers it calculates that:
The use of MySQL will drop from 82.1% to 78.7% in 2011 and 72.3% 2014. An
Oracle acquisition could run off 15% of all open source users and 14.4% of
current MySQL users. At least they told 451 that they would be less likely to
use MySQL if Oracle acquires it. Of course that has probably been said by
users of every company Oracle has ever acquired. On the other hand, 6.3% of
all open source users and 5.6% of MySQL users are more likely to use MySQL if
it's acquired by Oracle. Use of MariaDB, the Monty Widenius fork that the
European Commission appears to be... (more)
Tesora to Deliver Oracle Database Connectivity in OpenStack Trove
Enterprises can now provision Oracle Database in OpenStack via the latest
version of the Tesora private cloud Database as a Service (DBaaS) platform,
the company's enhanced implementation of OpenStack Trove.
Tesora has developed the first Trove guest agent for Oracle Database 12c.
Enterprises can now use OpenStack Trove to create, configure, and start
Oracle pluggable databases within a container database environment. The
Oracle container database can be pre-provisioned on dedicated hardware to
deliver an ideal user experience and efficient use of resources.
The implementation includes a Trove guest agent for Oracle Database, which
acts as a proxy between OpenStack and the Oracle server to administer
databases. Tesora's Remote Agent Architecture simplifies agent communication
with Oracle Database.

I visited 4 customers yesterday with one of our channel partner
specialists, James Rupprecht of Valcom in Salt Lake City. It was an
excellent day talking with IT professionals about what they've been doing and
what they are planning to do. VMware, Exchange, SQL Server, Netware,
Oracle, snapshot, volume cloning, remote replication, D2D backup: they have
it running on our storage and are very happy. What else do these customers
have in common? They don't like working any harder on storage than they need
to.

Michael Dell claimed Tuesday that simply the talk of a Sun-IBM tie-up is an
"enormous opportunity" for Dell servers since it creates an air of
uncertainty around the future of Sun's Solaris-based boxes and accelerates
the move to x86 Linux machines.
According to reports Dell's CEO said in Tokyo that "Just the rumor of IBM
potentially purchasing Sun creates an enormous opportunity because all of the
Sun accounts are very concerned about what will happen to the Solaris
platform and Sparc microprocessor."
Dell of course is in a pickle because both IBM and HP are ahead of Dell in
servers with Cisco now bringing up the rear.
He also overstates the case on migration since x86 platforms, as powerful as
they've become, can't always replace a high-end Sun machine and Dell's focus
has been on low- and mid-range x86 servers where it's second to HP.
Of course it's equally true tha... (more)
“We estimate that the acquired business will contribute over $1.5 billion
to Oracle’s non-GAAP operating profit in the first year, increasing to over
$2 billion in the second year,” said Oracle's President Safra Catz
(pictured), after the board of both Oracle and Sun unanimously approved the
acquisition of Sun by Oracle for $7.4 billion in a deal anticipated to close
this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory
approvals and customary closing conditions.
“We expect this acquisition to be accretive to Oracle’s earnings by at
least 15 cents on a non-GAAP basis in the first full year after closing,”
said Catz in an offiocial statement this morning, before adding that the
$1.5BN was a very satisfying aspect of the deal indeed:
“This would make the Sun acquisition more profitable in per share
contribution in the first year than we had planned for ... (more)
Mergers & Acquisitions on Ulitzer
With only the ‘you may now kiss the bride’ custom to follow, the
Oracle/Sun marriage (or dare I say Sun/Oracle) is now finally complete. After
months of legal wrangling which has caused nothing but embarrassment and
dwindled Sun’s stature within the market sphere, reports also came out that
half of Sun's 27,000 staff will be made redundant. Thus initial indications
are clear that Oracle, known for its past agnosticism to open source has an
eye for the merger being based on maximizing profit. In the meantime Sun’s
competitors are probably smiling wryly as the delay of the merger played into
their immediate interests but what threats and challenges does this
partnership now pose to the once great open source vendor which did so much
for developing the tech and e-commerce industry.
One thing which Oracle will most probably do is addres... (more)
