Yes this post is about the #Brexit, but it's about your data more
importantly!
As a company that has a large customer and open source user community in the
EU, I thought a quick note on some considerations following the Brexit vote
were in order. This is not an opinion piece, as that would seem to be casting
stones at this point. The vote is done and the process will move forward as
it was voted, but I do think the impacts of this decision are going to be
incredibly disruptive and likely felt for a long time to come in many ways
well outside the economic or political realms. There is no sector of industry
or field of study that will not face potential disruption, and the deeper and
larger ramifications of the departure of the Kingdom from the EU are starting
to come into focus. If you think there isn't impact for data analytics, think
again!

Well these are rather grim news from a security standpoint. VMware's
Determina's acquisition and its rather dubious Bluelane acquisition, where no
one apparantly made any profit, are putting VMware under solid pressure.
I really don't know if all this is because of the restructuring within VMware
or merely that some other shift is going to happen. VMware surely is on some
rather contradictory paths given that it is under tremendous pressure from
the security community to provide some solid answers around Security and
Compliance. VMware has made progress around the PCI DSS participation but
strategically it is on the losing side.
Bluelane's acquisition has left a lot of people with some bitter taste in
their mouths. Speaking to a Bluelane employee, who wished anonymity, there
was a lot at play since Feb 2008. during Cannes VMworld, some sort of deal
was struck to buy B... (more)
Managed services provider Verizon Business has added an interesting twist to
its security toolbox. Traditionally, managed security services are tactical:
they monitor a network for potential attacks, using virus signatures and
other definitions.
Earlier this month, Verizon upgraded its customers' security capabilities
with what it calls its "Risk-Correlation Service," designed to add strategic
insight to security.
The RCS works with vulnerability scans -- either those it does for customers
or those from vendors such as McAfee, Qualys, and others -- to determine
where potential vulnerabilities exist. The service also documents your system
to create a map of devices and the business processes that run on them. "It
marries threat information with vulnerability information," says Jonathan
Nguyen-Duy, Director of Product Management for Verizon.

home-based call center and concierge services, has been validated as a Level
1 Service Provider in compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security
Standard (PCI-DSS). Two years ago, VIPdesk achieved compliance with PCI-DSS
as a Level 3 Service Provider and was the first home-based call center and
concierge service to do so. VIPdesk has maintained compliance since that time
and has now validated compliance at a higher level, Level 1. VIPdesk's
compliance with PCI-DSS helps ensure that confidential information at VIPdesk

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)
