Virtualization: Good For 2008?

Splunk announced results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2007, revealing that it exceeded its sales forecast for the quarter by 35 percent and achieved 133 percent of its forecast for the fiscal year. Splunk ended the year with more than 500 enterprise, service provider and government agency customers. During the quarter, Splunk added more than 100 new customers and upgraded 40 customers to higher data indexing levels. The three most active industries contributing to the quarter were financial services, online services, telecommunications and government agencies. New customers include Bear Stearns and Company Inc., Orbitz, AT and T Wireless and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Agile Cloud, Big Data and Mobility

Cloud computing has reduced deployment times and the ability to try out new ideas without significant investments in hardware and software. Cloud supports business agility and Cloud projects may have a quicker turnaround time for releases. Many programs have declared victory as being Agile since they are using the rapid deployment capabilities of Cloud and Big Data. The myth is "I use Cloud" hence I'm Agile". However this is only the business agility aspect in terms of using the "pay as you go" model of Cloud to have quicker provisioning and deployments. Okta Seeks to Accelerate Secure Adoption of Cloud Apps

"Enterprises everywhere are realizing the inherent benefits of running their core IT services in the cloud,” said Todd McKinnon, most recently VP of Engineering at Salesforce.com from 2003 to 2009, and now CEO of the on-demand identity and access management service, Okta. "This shift fundamentally requires them to rethink their IT infrastructure and how their employees access it," McKinnon added. "Okta," he continued, "is the only enterprise class, on-demand service purpose built to help customer secure and manage their entire cloud services network and the people who need access to it, with no professional services required." McKinnon was commenting on the day that he and his team launched a new on-demand service to accelerate the secure adoption of Cloud Apps. Maritz Goes to EMC, Gelsinger To Run VMware

Paul Maritz, the CEO of EMC subsidiary VMware for the last four years, is stepping down and will be replaced by president and COO of EMC Information Infrastructure Products Pat Gelsinger (pictured below), the 30-year Intel veteran who might have wound up as CEO there if he had stayed and Paul Otellini retired. Gelsinger will start running VMware September 1 for the experience ahead of EMC deciding who’s going to replace CEO Joe Tucci. The news was confirmed late Tuesday after rumors that Maritz had been ousted depressed VMware stock price by 5%. As it turns out Maritz is gonna be some kind of Big Data and cloud-oriented applications strategist at EMC, reporting to Tucci and keeping his seat on the VMware board. Virtualization Leader, VMware, Reports Fourth-Quarter and Fiscal Year 2007 Results

VMware announced financial results for the fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2007: Total revenues for the fourth quarter were $412 million, an increase of 80% compared to the year-ago quarter.GAAP operating income for the fourth quarter was $76 million compared to $37 million in the fourth quarter of 2006.  Non-GAAP operating income was $108 million, representing 26% of fourth-quarter revenues and an increase of 72% over the year-ago quarter.GAAP net income for the quarter was $78 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, compared to $31 million, or $0.09 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.  Non-GAAP net income for the quarter was $103 million, or $0.26 per diluted share.  GAAP and non-GAAP net income for the fourth quarter of 2007 include a $0.01 per diluted share benefit from a change in tax rate.Total revenues for the full fiscal year 2007 were $1.33 billio...
