has cut its ties with Robert Moffat, the senior VP who ran its server,
storage and chips businesses and was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly
whispering insider information on IBM and Sun financial results as well as
AMD's reorganization plans to hedge funds that traded on the material
information.
IBM isn't saying much, not even that Moffat was fired, merely that he is no
longer an IBM employee.
Three days after Moffat was arrested on October 19 on charges of conspiracy
to commit securities fraud IBM put him on administrative leave and replaced
him temporarily with Rod Aktins, whose accession as IBM's highest-ranking
African-American executive is now confirmed.
It could have taken IBM two weeks just to talk with Moffat and his lawyer let
alone do its own internal investigation.

New Castle hedge fund co-founder Mark Kurland, 61, drew 27 months in a
federal lock-up and the forfeit of $900,000 last Friday for his part in the
Galleon insider trading scandal, the first of the admitted conspirators to be
sentenced for securities fraud.
Kurland was Danielle Chiesi’s boss and Chiesi is the aging beauty queen
captured on wiretaps beguiling insider information on AMD, IBM and Lenovo out
of former IBM senior exec Robert Moffat, tips that she, Kurland and others
traded on.
Kurland’s lawyers tried to get him off with just probation, and argued that
he shouldn’t have to do more time than Moffat, who like Kurland pleaded
guilty and isn’t cooperating with the authorities but reportedly cut a deal
that will see him get no more than six months in the slammer when he’s
sentenced.

Keith Lea writes of the benchmark, on his results page, "I was sick of
hearing people say Java was slow, when I know it's pretty fast, so I took the
benchmark code for C++ and Java from the now outdated Great Computer Language
Shootout and ran the tests myself."
Lea used G++ (GCC) 3.3.1 20030930 (with glibc 2.3.2-98) for the C++, with the
-O2 flag (for both i386 and i686). He compiled the Java code normally with
the Sun Java 1.4.2_01 compiler, and ran it with the Sun 1.4.2_01 JVM. He ran
the tests on Red Hat Linux 9 / Fedora Test1 with the 2.4.20-20.9 kernel on a
T30 laptop. The laptop "has a Pentium 4 mobile chip, 512MB of memory, a sort
of slow disk," he notes.
The results he got were that Java is significantly faster than optimized C++
in many cases.
"They also show that no one should ever run the client JVM when given the
choice," Lea adds. ("Everyone has the c... (more)

CloudEXPO Stories By Zakia Bouachraoui Public clouds dominate IT conversations but the next phase of cloud evolutions are "multi" hybrid cloud environments. The winners in the cloud services industry will be those organizations that understand how to leverage these technologies as complete service solutions for specific customer verticals. In turn, both business and IT actors throughout the enterprise will need to increase their engagement with multi-cloud deployments today while planning a technology strategy that will constitute a significant part of their IT budgets in the very near future. As IoT solutions are growing rapidly, as well as security challenges growing exponentially, without a doubt, the cloud world is about to change for the better. Again. Apr. 14, 2019 01:00 PM EDT | By Pat Romanski While some developers care passionately about how data centers and clouds are architected, for most, it is only the end result that matters. To the majority of companies, technology exists to solve a business problem, and only delivers value when it is solving that problem. 2017 brings the mainstream adoption of containers for production workloads.
In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Ben McCormack, VP of Operations at Evernote, discussed how data centers of the future will be managed, how the public cloud best suits your organization, and what the future holds for operations and infrastructure engineers in a post-container world. Is a serverless world inevitable?
