SYS-CON's 3rd international Virtualization Conference & Expo, which took
place June 23-24, 2008 in New York City, attracted more qualified delegates
than any Gartner event in the past two years. Virtualization has quickly
become a staple new concept for enterprise IT. At SYS-CON's 3rd International
Virtualization Conference & Expo held at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York
City, June 23-24, the conference faculty had exceptional speakers with
high-quality use cases not only of how virtualization maximizes the use of
resources and thus saves companies money, but also of how it is fundamentally
altering the way that businesses run IT.
The two content-packed days emphasized value with a rich array of sessions
about the business and technical value of virtualization. Enjoy the photo

On the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 12,000 for the first
time since June 2008, it was impossible not to correlate the eloquence and
optimism of President Obama's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday night
with the restoration of a sense of perspective and hope in the USA about the
future.
Obama grasped the nettle full-on. "We are poised for progress," he declared,
adding:
"Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock
market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is
growing."
As one blogger expressed it, though - and he is a former Goldman Sachs trader
called Tyler Durden, so he ought to know wheref he speaks:
"There was a massive pink elephant in the room called reality though."
Durden's gripe is with what he deems to be the unreality of Obama's praising
Google and Facebook so highly in an Ameri... (more)

What is Application Performance Management (APM)? Like a lot of good
questions, it depends on your business needs. What is the goal of an ideal
APM? Does it mean 99.999% availability? Perhaps it is a favorable overall
end user experience when using the application but, as compared to what?
My point is that Application Performance Management / Monitoring means
different things to different businesses and it can even depend on the
application involved.
What is the Goal of APM
“Begin with the goal in mind.” I wish I could take credit for that
quote. What is the goal of the APM? Have you listed out the objectives you
hope to obtain from your APM strategy? This approach will help your team
ensure satisfaction with the final solution chosen. Here are some examples.
Minimum of 99.999% availability with lower Mean Time To Know (MTTK) and Mean
Time To Repair (MTTR) Less ... (more)
"People are a lot more knowledgeable about APIs now. There are two types of
people who work with APIs - IT people who want to use APIs for something
internal and the product managers who want to do something outside APIs for
people to connect to them," explained Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice
President at SOA Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 15th Cloud Expo,
held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Internet of Things, Data and APIs
When something as simple as an API can integrate massive amounts of data
into, and through, a wide variety of applications, any company can be a
digital enterprise. There is a perception that some industries are using
technology to innovate, while others languish in antiquated ways of running
their business. But in our massively connected age, it's rare to find
examples where technology isn't... (more)
(April 21, 2003) - The Liberty Alliance has released drafts of its Phase 2
specifications, aimed at creating a commonly accepted and more trusted way of
building and managing identity-based Web services. Drafts of security and
privacy implementation guidelines as well as a "Privacy and Security Best
Practices" document, were also introduced. These documents highlight global
privacy laws and fair information practices, as well as provide
implementation guidance for organizations using the Liberty Alliance specs to
build identity-based services.
The Phase 2 technical specification drafts provide three new elements to
Liberty Alliance's Federated Network Identity Architecture. These elements
are:

Application versioning has always been a challenge for the developer
community. With the introduction of Web services, this issue becomes even
more difficult as developers are dealing with a more distributed set of
components that aren't necessarily under their control.
A robust versioning strategy is needed to support multiple versions of Web
services in development. This can allow for upgrades and improvements to be
made to a Web service, while continuously supporting previously released
versions. The right versioning strategy can maximize code reuse and provide a
more manageable approach to the naming, deployment, and maintenance of your
Web services.
The issue of versioning is a complicated one, and this article does not
attempt to answer every question surrounding the versioning of XML and Web
services. However, there are some key approaches and design practice... (more)

Much has been written about the new Google GMail trial, which is an e-mail
service that offers a gigabyte of archiving, Google search of your mail
archives and a nice interface. It's free, because while you read your mail,
Google ads will be displayed based on keywords found in the mail you are
reading (just as the Google Adsense program shows ads like the ones you see
on the right based on words found in this document.)
GMail created a surprising storm for a product that hasn't yet been released.
A coalition of privacy groups asked Google to hold back on releasing it. A
California state senator proposed a law to ban the advertising function.
Editorials and blog entries left and right have condemned it and praised it.
I come to this problem from two sides. One, I'm a fan of Google, and have
been friends with Google's management since they started the company. I've

Since releasing my latest book, Enterprise Service Bus (O'Reilly Media,
2004), I have been doing a fair amount of visiting corporations, conducting
seminars, and generally discussing with enterprise architects the subject of
enterprise service-oriented architecture (SOA) and how an enterprise service
bus (ESB) backbone can be leveraged to provide a framework for an enterprise
SOA. Along the way, I have been asked many questions about the nature of an
ESB. I have also fended off some misconceptions that have been growing in the
general IT population regarding what an ESB is and when, where, and how it
can be used. I have gathered together the most popular questions and
misconceptions, and offer some clarity in the form of a "top ten" list.
Myth #1. ESB is just a new name for EAI.
While many IT architecture groups are focusing on building SOAs, they still
inevitably be... (more)
Microservices Articles By Liz McMillan DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE).
Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and... Mar. 31, 2019 03:00 AM EDT Reads: 4,490 | By Liz McMillan Modern software design has fundamentally changed how we manage applications, causing many to turn to containers as the new virtual machine for resource management. As container adoption grows beyond stateless applications to stateful workloads, the need for persistent storage is foundational - something customers routinely cite as a top pain point. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Bill Borsari, Head of Systems Engineering at Datera, explored how organizations can reap the bene... How do you leverage advanced scheduling techniques to shape and describe each scenario in easy-to-use rules and configurations? In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Oleg Chunikhin, CTO at Kublr, answered these questions and demonstrated techniques for implementing advanced scheduling. For example, using spot instances and co... Mar. 19, 2019 09:45 PM EDT Reads: 6,796 | By Stackify Blog Docker is sweeping across startups and enterprises alike, changing the way we build and ship applications. It's the most prominent and widely known software container platform, and it's particularly useful for eliminating common challenges when collaborating on code (like the "it works on my machine" phenomenon that most devs know all too well). With Docker, you can run and manage apps side-by-side - in isolated containers - resulting in better compute density. It's something that many developer... Mar. 18, 2019 08:00 PM EDT Reads: 8,469 | By Elizabeth White As software becomes more and more complex, we, as software developers, have been splitting up our code into smaller and smaller components. This is also true for the environment in which we run our code: going from bare metal, to VMs to the modern-day Cloud Native world of containers, schedulers and micro services. While we have figured out how to run containerized applications in the cloud using schedulers, we've yet to come up with a good solution to bridge the gap between getting your contain... Mar. 14, 2019 07:00 PM EDT Reads: 14,063 | By Andreas Grabner DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO’s chair will come from the IT leaders that successfully ma...
