Facebook, Google, and the Near-Term Future of the USA

On the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 12,000 for the first time since June 2008, it was impossible not to correlate the eloquence and optimism of President Obama's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday night with the restoration of a sense of perspective and hope in the USA about the future. Obama grasped the nettle full-on. "We are poised for progress," he declared, adding: "Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is growing." As one blogger expressed it, though - and he is a former Goldman Sachs trader called Tyler Durden, so he ought to know wheref he speaks: "There was a massive pink elephant in the room called reality though." Durden's gripe is with what he deems to be the unreality of Obama's praising Google and Facebook so highly in an Ameri... (more)

The Shape of iPhone Content (And Other Devices) To Come?

Dave Meeker's Blog Orientation-Specific Content is exactly what it sounds like: based on the orientation of a user's device, the content on the screen changes accordingly. You can detect the orientation via JavaScript in iPhone's Safari browser and allow your content to react to it in one way or another. I can think of a multitude of ways to implement this as a design tactic. Today I was turned on to a Web site created by Dave & Alex at Engage Interactive, an interactive design and development shop in the UK (Harrogate to be specific). I have had a variety of recent conversations and personal thoughts about content that is optimized for Apple's iPhone platform (and potentially many other devices). Check out what the guys at Engage have done to put a smile on my face. I hope it is a sign of things to come from everyone and anyone who is creating multi-channel (multi-de... (more)

Opportunities and Enterprise Mobility?

This is the third in a series of five initial articles, in which I'm going to put my thoughts and findings on the subject of Enteprise Mobility. For this article I've decided to discuss the Opportunities that lie in front of companies that undertake an Enterprise Mobility Strategy. As part of making 'Mobility for the Masses', that I mentioned in my last article, the Information Worker (example here) has become a key mobile worker. The oppertunites to be gained here are... Ability to mobilize workflow Enabling transparency of business processes Zero latency of the above Agility of the worker with competitive data at their fingertips... anytime & anywhere Many critical processes are part of business process/workflow such as Purchase order requisition, HR requisition, Expense approvals, Intranet notifications, Timesheets, Tracking KPIs and CRM sales activity. The Advent of the Cloud

The Internet is going through a major transformation, shifting from the "Internet as application" to the "Internet as data provisioning system," and from fixed to mobile platforms like smart phones and tablets. It's nothing short of a revolution. Traditional forms of web analytics and web performance monitoring are being rendered obsolete. The concepts of "page load" or "visit" or "visitor" are quickly disappearing. Sites are rapidly becoming service-oriented providers of data to hungry mobile applications and it is already throwing a monkey wrench into management tools, transforming the way that the industry will need to think about user behavior and service levels. The current over-emphasis on cloud technology has obscured an even larger and more important shift - the shift away from "Internet as application" to "Internet as data provisioning system." The tech in... (more)

Enterprise Mobility and Network Centric Management Strategies

Some of the most technologically advanced organizations in the world today are utilizing strategies based on the concept of the Network Centric Organization. These strategies, methodologies and concepts are important for just about any organization that is geographically dispersed and requires the organization and management of remote and mobile workforces and assets. The concept of the "network centric" organization relates to the fact that people, objects, events, activities, assets, inventories, locations, fleets, equipment, tools, etc, are all connected to the Internet (aka network), monitored, and most often visible on a map.  All of these connected components are providing data in real-time that can be used to manage operations.  This collected data is wirelessly sent to a central server where it forms a real time and unified view of operations that can be used... Serverless applications increase developer productivity and time to market, by freeing engineers from spending time on infrastructure provisioning, configuration and management. Serverless also simplifies Operations and reduces cost - as the Kubernetes container infrastructure required to run these applications is automatically spun up and scaled precisely with the workload, to optimally handle all runtime requests. Recent advances in open source technology now allow organizations to run Serverless and Kubernetes reliably, at scale, also on on-premises and private cloud infrastructure. The ability to achieve the benefits of Serverless on existing infrastructure - and not having to rely solely on public clouds - has greatly increased the adoption of Serverless across industries, including financial services, IoT, retail, healthcare, and more. Serverless offers an incredible opportun...
