Your latest assignment includes building those applications and application servers that will propel your firm's business to the next level. Where to physically locate these new servers is the question, though. So, it's up to you to help design or evaluate new or existing data center space. Not sure of how to do this? It's not an insurmountable task if you know the basic building blocks which go into every comprehensive data center. This article will steer you through the many options available, and the factors that affect a data center's design. Data centers no longer only include the cavernous mega-centers of the past. With processing power fitting into a smaller physical footprint, and smaller companies requiring less processing equipment than the much larger enterprise-class company, data centers now range in size from huge facilities to spaces no larger than a... WebSphere Risk Management Part 1

In this article, the first part of a two-part series, I will present WASLED/WASMON, a WebSphere monitoring application, and show you how you can use it to monitor WebSphere Application Server and to plan a WebSphere risk management procedure. I will discuss some of the system resources that need to be made available to ensure the operability of WebSphere Application Server. You will learn how to configure WASMON to ensure that these resources are available and up and running. I will show you how to prepare the essential recovery scripts and make them available within the WASMON repository so you can trigger specific actions upon failure notification. You will then learn how to communicate with WASMON via the Internet to initialize an administrative action. In this article I use the example Web application WASDG, which was used throughout my book, IBM WebSphere Appli... (more)

Creating XML - Based Web Applications Using IBM VisualAge for Java

Since the mid-'90s we've seen the quality of Web programming paradigms mature at an astonishing rate: from static pages with animation, CGI-based programs, and JDBC connectivity to back-end relational databases and servlets processing requests on application servers. We commonly hear about Web pages being more interactive, likely using HTML forms, JavaScript, or Java applets. Beyond the battle being waged on the first tier, the client, it's important to understand the drive toward scalable, platform-neutral technologies on the middle and back-end tiers. In particular, Java and XML set the stage for the growth of B2B Web marketplaces, where participants in supply chain management (SCM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) will realize enormous gains in speed and access to data. In this article we'll look at a simple application that uses Java and XML to manage data... (more)

The Missing Piece in Cloud Computing

To achieve the full potential of "cloud computing" we need a broader definition of virtualization, and that is the complete de-coupling of the logical components of an application (represented by the software stack) and the physical resources. In the case of middleware, whether it is data access, messaging or the business logic, the physical location of the resources should not matter to the developer and to the end user. This is not a trivial thing to do, especially when it comes to data-intensive, stateful (transactional or otherwise) applications and services. In this session we will explore the challenges and propose a solution, including a live demo. ‘Tipper A’ Had Her Fingers in the Intel Cookie Jar Before

Turns out one of the government's key witnesses in its insider trading case against the Galleon Group hedge fund - the one that's brought down a senior IBM executive a heartbeat or two away from IBM's CEO - used to be employed by Intel and was charged in 2001 in a sealed criminal complaint with wire fraud for sending material information about Intel's financials to Galleon according to a story by a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter at the San Joe Mercury News. Roomy Khan has been identified by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times as the "confidential" informant the SEC calls "Tipper A" in its current suit against billionaire Galleon CEO Raj Rajaratnam and his five confederates, including Robert Moffat, the guy who ran IBM's $19-billion-a-year server and storage unit until last week. It's supposed to be the largest case of insider trading involving a hedge f... (more)

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/c4xpjb/html5_new_monetiz) has announced the addition of the "HTML5: New Monetization Opportunities for Service Providers" report to their offering. The introduction of HTML5 is expected to lead to profound changes in application delivery and design. It includes the ability for many applications to run natively in browsers and offline on devices thanks to advanced caching capabilities.
