Microsoft has emitted a squeal of protest much like a stuck pig over a secret "Open Cloud Manifesto" that it says is quietly being handed around the industry seeking signoffs. It doesn't identify the author or authors of this manifesto but figures its supporters - one would guess organized by IBM given some recent whispers coming from its direction - are going to reveal themselves soon enough and is warning against them. See, apparently Microsoft wasn't asked to contribute to drafting the manifesto, which evidently lays down "principles and guidelines for interoperability in cloud computing." It says in a blog, "We were admittedly disappointed by the lack of openness in the development of the Cloud Manifesto." And apparently the manifesto is a take-it-or-leave-it proposition with no room for Microsoft to maneuver. It says "what we heard was that there was no desire to d... (more)

Cloud Expo and The End of Tech Recession

http://twitter.com/fuatkircaali At SYS-CON Media we see our inventories are filling up to 100% capacity for the months of November, December, and January, and we are seeing better-than-normal RFP activity for the first quarter of 2010. When I say this, I am comparing the current insertion order activity to the same period last year. We will be closing 2009 roughly 32% below 2008 in revenues (far better than any other tech media company), which forced us to reduce our expenses for the same period by around 40%. Last fall, while the world was falling apart, we were preparing for a 40%-45% drop in advertising revenues for 2009. We did better than our worst projections. Chuck Phillips Was Supposed to Become CEO of CA

Oracle Keynote at Cloud Expo Cloud Computing News - Oracle co-president Charles Phillips was supposed to become CEO of CA - for all its muddied skirts still one of the world's largest software companies - and then those "soul mates forever" billboards popped up in New York, Atlanta and San Francisco, exposing his near decade-long bi-coastal double life with wife and son in the East and a live-in girlfriend in the West. Six days after Phillips was forced to admit that a picture of him and his ex-girlfriend canoodling was hanging over Times Square, CA named board member and executive chairman Bill McCracken CEO. He's the guy who's been running the company since John Swainson's reportedly forced retirement was announced in September. Top Two Technology Priorities for CIOs in 2011: Cloud & Virtualization

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). "CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing legacy requirements," McDonald continued, noting that "Cloud services and virtualization are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar service levels at lower budget costs." The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster than originally expected. Cur... (more)

As you know, enterprise IT conversation over the past year have often centered upon the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration system. In fact, Kubernetes has emerged as the key technology -- and even primary platform -- of cloud migrations for a wide variety of organizations. Kubernetes is critical to forward-looking enterprises that continue to push their IT infrastructures toward maximum functionality, scalability, and flexibility. As they do so, IT professionals are also embracing the reality of Serverless architectures, which are critical to developing and operating real-time applications and services. Serverless is particularly important as enterprises of all sizes develop and deploy Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives.
Blockchain is a new buzzword that promises to revolutionize the way we manage data. If the data is stored in a blockchain there is no need for a middleman - the distributed database is stored on multiple and there is no need to have a centralized server that will ensure that the transactions can be trusted. The best way to understand how a blockchain works is to build one. During this presentation, we'll start with covering the basics (hash, nounce, block, smart contracts) and then we'll create a simple blockchain and a web client for it. Disclaimer. This presentation is not about bitcoins, and it won't make you rich overnight.
DevOps solutions are tying together increasingly complex tools that can be hard to manage and monitor. To check on the health of your processes you need to be dialed in to your source code, artifact management, continuous integration, delivery and deployment, static code analysis, security analysis, monitoring health, infrastructure and test automation, just to name a few. Come see how to aggregate your view of the DevOps world in practice.
Kubernetes as a Container Platform is becoming a de facto for every enterprise. In my interactions with enterprises adopting container platform, I come across common questions: - How does application security work on this platform? What all do I need to secure? - How do I implement security in pipelines? - What about vulnerabilities discovered at a later point in time? - What are newer technologies like Istio Service Mesh bring to table? In this session, I will be addressing these commonly asked questions that every enterprise trying to adopt an Enterprise Kubernetes Platform needs to know so that they can make informed decisions.
