For Valentine's Day, here's a lighthearted look at the "relationship" between
two complementary technologies: service virtualization and cloud dev/test
labs.
Dear Service Virtualization,
Hey, I know it's been a while since we started being "a thing." When we met,
everyone said you were just mocking, and that I wasn't real enough to make a
living, with my head in the clouds. Yet, here we are, a few years later.
Service Virtualization, you complete me.
As a young Dev/Test Cloud, I always wanted to try new things. And what better
use for Cloud than experimenting with software for startup companies? I was
flexible, I thought I had the capacity to handle anything. I'd stay up all
night studying or partying, but sometimes I'd crash. So what if some college
kid's cloud-based photo-sharing site experiment goes down? It wasn't going to
impact anyone's life.
But when it came... (more)

A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing.
Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active
players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we
identified back in January of this year, to half as many again - testimony,
if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the
"Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites cited. As ever we encourage software engineers, developers, IT
operations managers, and new/growing companies in every case to "suck it and
see" by downloading or otherwise sampling the offering in question for
themselves.

Verizon Business introduced an on-demand, cloud-based Computing as a Service
(CaaS) solution -- designed to meet the stringent security and performance
requirements of their enterprise customers.
This new offering helps businesses take advantage of cloud (IP-based)
computing to more efficiently and securely manage IT computing resources --
server, network and storage -- to meet day-to-day business demands.
This CaaS solution, which leverages Verizon's global IP infrastructure and
data centers, enables companies to use a Web-based portal to employ computing
resources in the quantities and duration dictated by their own business
needs.
As a result, businesses pay for the resources used and avoid having to build
out for peak capacity requirements by buying new equipment and adding IT or
networking staff.
Designed for mid-to-large-sized businesses, CaaS is ideal for new dev... (more)
Following through on a much anticipated action, GSA released their Cloud
Computing Request For Quotation (RFQ) today. Cloud computing is a major part
of President Obama's reform effort and this RFQ focuses on IaaS service
offerings available within a public cloud deployment model. The
implementation is a Low Impact System as defined in National Institute of
Science and Technology (NIST) Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)
Publication 199.
According to that publication, the potential impact is low if the loss of
confidentiality, integrity, or availability could be expected to have a
limited adverse effect on organizational operations, organizational assets,
or individuals. A limited adverse effect means that, for example, the loss of
confidentiality, integrity, or availability might:
cause a degradation in mission capability to an extent and duration that... (more)
Read Part 1 and Part 2 (IaaS) and Part 3 (SaaS) here.
In the previous entries we discussed the possible impact of IaaS
(Infrastructure as a Service), SaaS (Software a as a Service) and even
briefly PaaS (Platform as a Service) on the role of our Cloud IT Manager
separately.
It is, however, important to realize these three models are not happening
separately; they are all happening at the same time and as result are
influencing each other. As all three models are delivered "as a service",
vendors are preparing themselves to play their role in 1, 2 or even all 3 of
these markets. Will our Cloud IT Manager only be a consumer of services
provided by these vendors or will he retain other responsibilities as
well? Sourcing services will certainly be a core activity, not only for end
user services (like CRM) but also for IT services like Infrastructure,
security and suppor... (more)
Salesforce.com is not a fan of customers who attempt to leave. I can’t
blame them, nobody likes to lose a customer. When you start to lose a lot of
customers, it can make you a little desperate, but this does not seem to
apply Salesforce.com, I mean in the last year alone their stock has gone up
20 points. They have obviously done an excellent job of convincing business
of the value of Cloud CRM. So why are they so hostile about people wanting to
leave? Maybe they are just paranoid. Ever since they launched in 1999, they
have absolutely “Owned” the cloud CRM space. To succeed they had to win
two battles, first was the concept of CRM which many companies had come to
think was a waste of time, and the second was that this was Software as a
Service running in the cloud, whatever that was. No small feat. But they did
win, and are still winning.
For years they looked in... (more)
