This is a checklist of items you need for an all-encompassing personal
branding strategy. Personal branding is the process of marketing and selling
yourself as a brand in order to gain success in business. Personal branding
is a continual process just as knowing yourself is a continual process. As
you grow, so does your brand. The need for personal branding arises from the
fact that globalization has increased competition in the workplace. As the
wheat is separated from the chaff, if you are left standing, you are left
standing with others of good caliber. The playing field is now that much more
challenging since your competition is as good as, or better, than you.
To paraphrase David Samuel, the bloke who got me into personal branding after
I saw him speak a few years ago; he spoke about of why you need personal
branding. His audience was a group from a large teleco... (more)

John Funnel on Ulitzer
Earlier this year one of my staff attended a SYS-CON event and returned to
the office a different person. Revitalised and motivated.
I asked her what happened at the event to warrant such a transformation? What
was her secret? Was it the New York Shopping experience? A business Romance
or was it Devine intervention?
She simply advised me to ‘check out Ulitzer. – Everyone who is anyone is
on it’.
She was not the first to introduce me to the innovation. Many of my peers had
gone through such noticeable changes, It was like a weight had been lifted
from their shoulders, that they now had a true portal to vent out their
innermost thoughts.
I was instantly intrigued by such recommendations. People, just like me, were
using Ulitzer everywhere. So what had I been fighting against all this time?
What was I avoiding?
Eventually I succumbed to the in... (more)

A recent study run by online business networking service www.MeettheBoss.com
shows that executives are spending an extra 11 hours a month online sharing
their professional experiences and learning from their peers.
The survey asked its executive users what direct value they gained from
spending time running blogs, writing tweets and connecting with other
executives on sites such as LinkedIn, Xing, MeettheBoss, Ryze, Facebook,
Ulitzer and Twitter.
The answers revealed that executives proficient with online activities are
spending an average of 11 hours more per month online than this time last
year – and over 90% of respondents said they felt their time online was
‘very valuable’ to their daily role.
Professionals are rushing to the Web for immediate answers to their most
pressing questions. “I find online business networking very useful,” says

The short answer is yes. In our estimation, roughly 70% of today's PR firms
with their traditional public relations and communications business
structures will not survive the fast-approaching social media avalanche. The
remaining 30% that need to reinvent their position real fast in their newly
morphed industry will prosper, compared to where they were and what they were
doing before.
For publicly traded companies, current rules dictate that information can be
made public by a press release or by a telephone conference call but not
simply on a website. Ninety percent of today's PR firms are still in business
simply because of this single rule.
For the first time three years ago, in 2006, Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan
Schwartz asked the SEC to change this rule. Well, the new White House is
already posting the President's weekly address... (more)
Social Media on Ulitzer
I use all of these social media tools and although they haven't put me on my
own island in the Caribbean yet, I'm very pleased with the combined results.
1. Twitter – It’s the fastest way to share that you have created
something of value. As a bonus, Tweetdeck or CoTweet are good ways to manage
your Twitter efforts and research. Huge audience with lots of active
participants. There are a few shady characters on Twitter but just like being
at Grand Central Station, you just step aside and keep moving. It doesn't
mean you eschew the benefit. Micro-blogging is probably here to stay so it's
a good idea to get up on good habits regardless of what future tools look
like.
2. Linked In – It’s the professional network standard where people will
find you. A terrific way to maintain knowledge of what former colleagues are
doing now. You can also join gr... (more)
Ok, so, here are my thoughts on Ulitzer...
As a blogger, I focus on traffic and I spend quite a lot of time optimizing
my SEO.
Since the target audience of my articles is much greater than the reach of my
blog, Ulitzer is actually helping me increase my content reach.
Moreover, Ulitzer does it in a very fair way since links back to my posts or
other locations are without the evil "nofollow" - providing a nice SEO boost.
It also gives me some good metrics that are very useful data points on the
effectiveness of my blog articles.
And last but not least, it allows my article to appears in the news listings
of the two major search engines, which is a very nice channel extension.
So, all of this means that, while Ulitzer might be seen as a competing
channel to bloggers, I think that bloggers should realize the tremendous
value it could bring to their blog.
I think to mater... (more)

I live 11 minutes away from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. Friday evening I
took a Cessna Caravan for a short 45-minute flight to Martha's Vineyard. This
was my first trip to the island. I didn't do any research and had false
expectations based on my long-time love affair with the island of Cat Cay in
the Bahamas. I found out that Martha's Vineyard was huge. Upon landing on the
island, my pilot called a cab for me to take me to my hotel. According to the
cab driver the island's population was around 30,000 off-season and well over
100,000 during its peak summer season. These numbers change drastically from
driver to driver or whomever you ask, of course. As compared to a maximum
three to six neighbors any time I go home to Cat Cay, this was an instant
shock to me.
I had a relaxing two-day weekend in Martha's Vineyard. As long as I ... (more)

Last week I received an email from Lindsey Miller at Ragan Communications. I
answered her questions for a story she was working on here.
The following is the full text of my reply to her on this subject.
What kinds of PR firm will survive the "fast-approaching new media
avalanche"? What steps will firms have to take to ensure that they make it
through?
I know a lot of PR firms that are chasing new accounts among publicly traded
companies, which are seen as cash cows in the business. I also know a lot of
firms whose sales teams are larger than their senior account staff which will
actually get the job done. These firms have armies of new college-grad
telemarketers spitting out press releases to the media.
For a while you can get away with both approaches. Once the laws, rules and
regulations change, the first group of PR firms will disapp... (more)
Personal Branding on Ulitzer
I read an article by an author on Ulitzer.com and was amazed at the
professional image it provided him. I immediately researched Ulitzer to see
if there was yet hope for me.
I am a technology blogger on the subject of mobile computing strategies. As
I was doing research I came across the author Ian Thain, a fellow mobile
computing blogger, who had a very professional website on Ulitzer
(www.ulitzer.com).
Professional envy motivated me to investigate this thing called Ulitzer.
Ian's website looked like he had spent a great deal of time and money on it -
all things I am short on.
I carefully studied Ian's website to see how it was set up. It looked like
an expensive industry portal with colorful graphics, animation and industry
news.
It had tabs that filtered articles, by most popular, by date, etc. I have
blogged for over 5 years so... (more)
I was reading a blog post entitled "Confessions of a Ulitzer Addict" by John

morning.
Joe has been a long-time Ulitzer author and has created a number of Ulitzer
