Serverless - The Next Major Shift in Cloud Computing
In 2014, Amazon announced a new form of compute called Lambda. We didn't know
it at the time, but this represented a fundamental shift in what we expect
from cloud computing. Now, all of the major cloud computing vendors want to
take part in this disruptive technology.
In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Doug Vanderweide, an instructor at Linux
Academy, will discuss why major players like AWS, Microsoft Azure, IBM
Bluemix, and Google Cloud Platform are all trying to sidestep VMs and
containers with heavy investments in serverless computing, when most of the
industry has its eyes on Docker and containers.

Serverless Computing or Functions as a Service (FaaS) is gaining momentum.
Amazon is fueling the innovation by expanding Lambda to edge devices and
content distribution network. IBM, Microsoft, and Google have their own
FaaS offerings in the public cloud. There are over half-a-dozen open source
serverless projects that are getting the attention of developers. This year,
expect to see new platforms emerging in this segment.
With all the excitement and hype around serverless, it's important to
understand what really defines the platform. Here is an attempt to highlight
the key attributes of serverless computing platforms. For customers, it acts
as a checklist for choosing the right offering while helping platform vendors
in optimizing their product.

How Serverless Computing Started
If you are part of the cloud development community, you certainly know about
“serverless computing,” almost a misnomer. Because it implies there are
no servers which is untrue. However the servers are hidden from the
developers. This model eliminates operational complexity and increases
developer productivity.
We came from monolithic computing to client-server to services to
microservices to the serverless model. In other words, our systems have
slowly “dissolved” from monolithic to function-by-function. Software is
developed and deployed as individual functions – a first-class object and
cloud runs it for you. These functions are triggered by events that follow
certain rules. Functions are written in a fixed set of languages, with a
fixed set of programming models and cloud-specific syntax and semantics.

Top Docker Tools: 51 Useful Docker Tools for Every Stage of the Development
Pipeline
By Angela Stringfellow
Docker is sweeping across startups and enterprises alike, changing the way we
build and ship applications. It's the most prominent and widely known
software container platform, and it's particularly useful for eliminating
common challenges when collaborating on code (like the "it works on my
machine" phenomenon that most devs know all too well). With Docker, you can
run and manage apps side-by-side - in isolated containers - resulting in
better compute density. It's something that many developers don't think
about, but you can even use Docker with ASP.NET.
You probably don't need to be sold on the many appealing Docker capabilities,
but you might not be familiar with the wide range of third-party tools that
integrate seamlessly with Docker, from logging tools ... (more)
At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is
a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the
DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being
data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation
if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500
companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still
survive. Similar percentages are found throughout enterprises of all sizes.

At its core DevOps is all about collaboration. The lines of communication
must be opened and it takes some effort to ensure that they stay that way.
It's easy to pay lip service to trends and talk about implementing new
methodologies, but without action, real benefits cannot be realized. Success
requires planning, advocates empowered to effect change, and, of course, the
right tooling.
To bring about a cultural shift it's important to share challenges. In simple
terms, ensuring that everyone knows what everyone else is doing can create a
real team spirit and social cohesion that will drive DevOps forward. Here are
six tips that can be implemented to help you get there.
1. Stand-ups
A daily team meeting where people get an opportunity to review their progress
by addressing three simple questions:
What did I do yesterday? What will I do today? What might block me fro... (more)

Two and a half years ago, when he stepped in to help Oracle get back into the
application server business, Thomas Kurian had quite a tough row to hoe. Now
he has 19,000 customers. JDJ explores with Kurian his 30-month journey, and
asks too about other aspects of emerging technology seen from the Oracle
perspective.
In JDJ last month, Sun's Jonathan Schwartz claimed the "death" of middleware,
so my first question to Thomas Kurian is inevitable, given his role as a
champion of middleware for Oracle. What does he make of Schwartz's claim?
"Those who say such things are being facetious," replies Kurian, bluntly. "A
company that says that there is no role for middleware means it in the sense
that it feels its own operating systems incorporate middleware facilities.
Such a company is bundling proprietary middleware into the OS as a vehicle to
try and lock c... (more)

In his keynote at 19th Cloud Expo, Sheng Liang, co-founder and CEO of
Rancher Labs, discussed the technological advances and new business
opportunities created by the rapid adoption of containers. With the success
of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and various open source technologies used to
build private clouds, cloud computing has become an essential component of IT
strategy.

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real purp... (more)
DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us.
The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days.
We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually
standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people!
My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with
RingCentral on Devops for BigData.
I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why
DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant
colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.
The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile
Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and
tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery
pipeline, from code changes to production updates.
Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)
