The use of containers by developers -- and now increasingly IT operators --
has grown from infatuation to deep and abiding love. But as with any
long-term affair, the honeymoon soon leads to needing to live well together
... and maybe even getting some relationship help along the way.
And so it goes with container orchestration and automation solutions, which
are rapidly emerging as the means to maintain the bliss between rapid
container adoption and broad container use among multiple cloud hosts.
This BriefingsDirect cloud services maturity discussion focuses on new ways
to gain container orchestration, to better use serverless computing models,
and employ inclusive management to keep the container love alive.

Microservice Forensics: Investigating Problems in Production
Register for this session Here
When you're operating multiple services in production, building out forensics
tools such as monitoring and observability becomes essential. Unfortunately,
it is a real challenge balancing priorities between building new features and
tools to help pinpoint root causes. Linkerd provides many of the tools you
need to tame the chaos of operating microservices in a cloud native world.
Because Linkerd is a transparent proxy that runs alongside your application,
there are no code changes required. It even comes with Prometheus to store
the metrics for you and pre-built Grafana dashboards to show exactly what is
important for your services - success rate, latency, and throughput.
In this session, we'll explain what Linkerd provides for you, demo the
installation of Linkerd on Kubernetes ... (more)

Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt
to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new
opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration,
seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The
results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our
history.
Unfortunately, there is no single deployment model that solves all of your
business goals. You need to maintain the flexibility to deploy in your data
center, to multi-clouds, or push to the edge to meet business specific cost,
agility or application requirements.
During this session, Brent Schroeder will discuss the evolving open source
ecosystem focused on enabling and managing these diverse approaches. With an

Two and a half years ago, when he stepped in to help Oracle get back into the
application server business, Thomas Kurian had quite a tough row to hoe. Now
he has 19,000 customers. JDJ explores with Kurian his 30-month journey, and
asks too about other aspects of emerging technology seen from the Oracle
perspective.
In JDJ last month, Sun's Jonathan Schwartz claimed the "death" of middleware,
so my first question to Thomas Kurian is inevitable, given his role as a
champion of middleware for Oracle. What does he make of Schwartz's claim?
"Those who say such things are being facetious," replies Kurian, bluntly. "A
company that says that there is no role for middleware means it in the sense
that it feels its own operating systems incorporate middleware facilities.
Such a company is bundling proprietary middleware into the OS as a vehicle to
try and lock c... (more)

In his keynote at 19th Cloud Expo, Sheng Liang, co-founder and CEO of
Rancher Labs, discussed the technological advances and new business
opportunities created by the rapid adoption of containers. With the success
of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and various open source technologies used to
build private clouds, cloud computing has become an essential component of IT
strategy.

However, users continue to face challenges in implementing clouds, as older
technologies evolve and newer ones like Docker containers gain prominence. He
explored these challenges and how to address them, while considering how
containers will influence the direction of cloud computing.

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real purp... (more)
DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us.
The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days.
We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually
standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people!
My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with
RingCentral on Devops for BigData.
I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why
DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant
colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.
The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile
Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and
tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery
pipeline, from code changes to production updates.
Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)

The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an
organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the
strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet,
it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of
items.

DevOps Summit 2015 New York, co-located with the 16th International Cloud
Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY
- announces that it is now accepting Keynote Proposals.
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo will expand the DevOps community, enable a
wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers
alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development
time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support
time generally. Tim... (more)
